When and where to get childs ears pierced?

Hi everyone :j,

My daughter is 6 and from time to time is asking about having her ears pierced. I had my ears pierced when I was 5 and remember the pain it caused. I screamed so loud I was heard a few shops away. Anyway this was at home in SA.

A few things I need help with:

1. Where do people get ears pierced here?
2. How much does it cost? I would only let her wear plain gold stud earings if that helps?
3. At what age do parents feel it's appropriate to pierce ears?
4. and lastly how sore is it really? I would imagine techonogies have advanced and maybe a painfree method exists?

THANKS!

    1. Where do people get ears pierced here? Shops like Claire's do it, but I got mine done at a Jewellers
    2. How much does it cost? I would only let her wear plain gold stud earings if that helps? No idea I am afraid.
    3. At what age do parents feel it's appropriate to pierce ears? Not until they are 13 years old at least
    4. and lastly how sore is it really? I would imagine techonogies have advanced and maybe a painfree method exists? I think they have gone from using a gun to a big needle but I am not 100% sure

Personally I cant stand seeing kids with their ears pierced, it is something me and OH have been talking about, I was 13 when I got mine done and I think that is an acceptable age.

  • Hi, all three of my girls got their ears pierced when they were 5 or 6 years old. They had it done in Claire`s Accessories. It costs about 22 pounds with gold studs I think. My oldest daughter had a second hole put in a couple of weeks ago and it cost 14 pounds as she had the hypo allergenic steel studs as she seemed to be allergic to the gold ones. They are good with children in my experience and two girls did the piercing at the same time, one for each ear...at least that way, if it is a shock for them, then it is over quite quickly. On the downside, when children go swimming/do p.e etc they have to take their earrings out (after six weeks)or cover them with micropore tape.I know some people don`t agree with piercings but it was a decision we made and all our girls are happy.;)

Thanks we also sort of think she's to young... but will only allow her to have one hole in each ear... Maybe 10 years old or so is better.

You're the grown up; tell her 'NO'. Until she is an adult and can make her own mind up.

    Simples.
  • Just to add that my daughter with her ears pierced twice is now 14;)
  • 1. Tatooists/body modification place, jeweelers or somewhere like Claire's Accesories.
    2. £6.50 from here: http://www.terra-pin.co.uk/bodypiercing/prices/
    3. [Disclaimer - I'm not a parent!] I had mine done at age 10. Personally, I think 6 years is a bit young to be making decisions about body modificaitons!
4.Well, they didn't have it 14 years ago, and I haven't heard anything about them having it now. I remember it hurt like hell!

  • As a PE teacher I have no problem with children having their ears pierced but do wish they would have them done on the day they break up for the summer holidays. That way they would be able to take them out on PE days when they return to school. The county I work for no longer allows children to cover their earrings up with tape for swimming so they would have to miss out if they couldn't be removed. I've spent hours helping children look for lost earrings in the changing rooms - drives me mad lol!!

  • I'd wait until she is at secondary school and can manage all the care and cleaning herself. By this age there is less of a risk of them being pulled out whilst playing too.

Most jewellers will do ear piercing, not sure of the cost but I think you are mainly paying for the earrings.

I think they use a sort of staple gun affair and it doesn't really hurt but is a shock and is sore.

My 6 year old daughter had her ears pierced at claire`s, they were very good with her. They did both ears at the same time & she felt no pain.
I made my other children wait until they reached 13, before having them done, but times have changed & 6 years old seems a reasonable age.

I think that is a crazy statement.

At 6 years old they should be playing with their dolls and toys and not worrying about getting their stud ripped out of their ear when they play.
