A friend tells me that they have just had their 17 year-old provisional licence holding daughter insured fully-comp on her runaround (Kia or something) for £500 with Quinn Direct. Policy in her own name and everything.

  • Im male and 18 so hopefuly i can help you, i've been doing a LOT of insurance quotes both for myself (about 6 months ago) and for my girlfriend. girl yes, but hold on and i will get to the point!

Are you livign at home or with a girlfriend? If so get insured on your mum or girlsfriend car, for me it cost 600-700 quid for a years named driver insurance on my mums mk3 astra with a 1.6 litre engine. And the mk3 astra is a bit of a boy racer car it must be said!

I also worked it through that for my girlfriend it would cost £1000 to get insured on a mk2 scirocco GTII with a 1.8 litre engine. For me on top of that with no year NCD and 6 months license it would cost £500-600. If i wait 6 months, then phone the insurers and tell them to put me on the license it will cost a mere £100!

My advice, if you can - get named on a girlfriend, sister, mothers car especially if you can go with the co-op, after two years you get your on NCD with co-op and possibly other insurers. More importantly KEEP YOUR LICENSE, dont get points, dont lose it for the love of god. Once the first year is out of the way the costs will just keep falling.

If im correct your NCD wont be as important as simply having held a license for more than 1 week.

Its sad that us males who do drive sensibly and take the proper precautions are lumped with hefty insurance premiums because every other little kid thinks hes the next Hamilton. :lipsrseal

That's quite a good quote but once he/she passes the test, the price will soon rocket up which sounds really daft as they are a better driver driver than before.
When you ask for a quote, what car are you saying you wish to insure?

The car I want to insure is a renault clio, 1.2, dynamique, 04 plate.

So if I go on my mums insurance as an additional driver, isn't that known as fronting? if I am going to be the main driver of the car. I know a lot of people that have done fronting even without knowing it's illegal. Surely if these car insurance companies lowered the prices for young drivers, then fronting wouldn't be a problem. I've tryed most insurance companies but the cheapest I found so far is just short of £2000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I guess I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and pay it even though it's tempting to front. I guess these car insurance companies don't like young drivers:mad:

    thanks for your help though

Quinn are cheap when you are a learner (I was quoted £1k) but when you pass they want more money (in my case, another £964!).

Plus she's a girl - When I was 17 I ended up paying £2k to be insured on my Proton, but the GF is paying £600 at the same age to go on a Ford Ka as the main driver.

Even with a full license, pass plus, a years NCB etc the lowest I can pay is £1,100 :(
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.
  • Surely the way for youngsters to go is Third Party or TPFT, in a used car which is only £1K something. Trying to go on modern Corsas etc full comp is always going to be expensive and TP on an older car should cut the costs.Today even cars back as far as 10 years (T reg) are still fairly safe unlike the deathtraps of old used cars of yesteryear!

It is painful full comp, but I fully understand why insurers have to price it so high, because too many young guys are manaics around cars and I've been there!

I was around £2K :rotfl: to have a car fully comp which I never seriously considered at that time- I got the quote as a laugh (and that was a number of years ago- so even more expensive now!). As I was a student and took the bus to uni didn't need a car bar on occasions- so I just went on the parents policy on their car. Got a NCB from it and when I needed my own car for work after I left uni at 23 it was only £500 fully comp with business. Result!

    Yes that is "fronting".
Best to go your own way and may be find a group 1 insurance car, that 1.2 16v Clio is group 3.
If you get a quote on a group 1 car how much less is it?

    Skoda Fabia 1.2 classic?
Newer cars of higher values do not make the premium higher unless it's worth over (for most insureres) around £30,000.

Trouble is though, Statistics show that young male drivers are involved in the most accidents.

It's nothing to do with not liking young drivers. It's nothing personal. As davetrousers states, the quotes are all statistic based.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
