  • Hi Polly

I know exactly what you mean about the low energy lightbulb moment, mine has been flickering on and off for about 3 weeks now! I know where you're coming from with the smoking thing too, I'm quitting at the moment, I seem to be better at giving up giving up than actually following through and giving up for good if you know what I mean!! I too have decided to knuckle down today and get on with getting rid of my debts, stopping smoking (costing me £5 a day!!!) I cant offer you a slap around the face with a wet fish as I'm fairly useless myself, but I can offer you a 'quitting smoking, quitting whining, quitting spending, debt busting buddy' :D

    Hi there,

No wet fish to offer but how about a deal -for the next 6 weeks I'll stop the wine if you keep off the ciggies....

Like you, I know I spend too much on the magic juice and my waistline shows it - but once I have finished what's in the house (not much, honest) - I'm not buying any more.......
I intend taking DH on holiday in October so the money saved will be good and also I'll feel so much better.

I usually update any diary in the morning rather than at night....

    Deal ?

Hey Polly! Good for you for looking at things from a different angle - sometimes that is all it takes :T

The bottom-line to this is smoking. All the other stuff seems a bit pointless when I’m spending so much money on cigarettes. I am, however, totally and horribly addicted. I have stopped before, (for five years and cold turkey too), so I know what to do – I just can’t seem to get to that point of ‘wanting it’ enough. I have added up how much money I would save and have it plastered around the house; I have cut the horrible pictures off the packets and stuck those up; I have read so much about smoking and quitting smoking I could write a thesis, but nothing’s working. I’m waiting for a “wet fish” moment, but I think I’m going to be dead before that happens.

The only, slightly, little bit of motivation I can dredge up is that I am truly sick and tired of thinking about giving up smoking. To try and give this diary a more positive note (which, if you’ve read this far, you’re probably screaming out for), you have to work with what you’ve got. I figure if I’m going to be thinking about smoking all the time anyway, I might as well be “not smoking” while I’m doing it. To that end, I hereby pledge to quit smoking today (time to be confirmed ).

    Polly

Are you able to recall what the triggers were for your quitting last time? And the reasons why you started again?

Whoa - you have been through the wars, haven't you. But you've come out on the other side & that's the most important part. I'm a great believer in using the carp that's thrown at me as a learning experience for life - and you have learned a lot....

Anyway, I tidied up the wine in the house last night so today is day 1 of no alcohol. And as I didn't get the ironing done last night, guess what will kep me busy tonight.

Take care & good luck on the ciggie free day

    Hi Polly

I'm quite new to this board, and have just read through your first few posts. Though I have not been through nearly as much as you, your description of walking around in a bit of a daze really struck a chord with me. You sound incredibly strong and motivated and I look forward to following your journey. Well done for coming out of the other side.

I started smoking again, I was drinking to help me sleep and just shut everything out, it was the start of the debt problems, and to be honest, I think I’ve been a bit bonkers ever since.

With hindsight, this was probably the worst possible way I could have dealt with things, and I almost certainly should have gone for some professional help, but I didn’t even think about it at the time. This last year, I’ve started to notice that I actually feel better. It sort of feels as if I’ve just been sleepwalking through the last god knows how many years and I’m just waking up, to find, well, life’s a bit of a mess, really.

I really want to get on and have a good life now, but there’s all this carp I’ve got to deal with first – the fallout, I suppose. I’ve barely taken any interest in my health, my appearance, my home, my family or friends, my finances – anything really, for a long, long time. The problem now is that, although I want to do something about it, get all motivated, yes, I’m going to do it, when push comes to shove, the old, dark “what’s the point” thoughts start coming back.

    Polly

You have had some really dark times, but it definitely sounds like there is light at the end of the tunnel! :T I haven't been through as much as you have been through, but I have been experienced some of it. Once you are able to start dealing with the smaller stuff, it sort of snowballs - a positive feedback loop where you feel better so you do more, and the sense of achievement makes you feel better ... :D
