Morning All
Today's PAD is £8.95 to Evil Egg
Can all you clever folks give me a few ideas please? It is DS's birthday at the end of the month and he is having a party at our house with a few of his friends and some family members - Halloween themed fancy dress, with a bonfire and fireworks.
What I need is ideas for food and games - can anyone think of some traditional type Halloween and Bonfire Night food, or games they could play? Or just some good ideas for food and games for this type of party? DS will be 15 () so needs to be geared towards slightly more 'grown-up' kids!PigginSkint's debt free diary

Got all our choices through for my first born's infant school for next september, how stressfull, made some appointment visits for a few schools, we are prepared to move to get him in to an outstanding school just want to make the right choice, its so important!!, god the responbility of another persons life is really overwhelming at times(in a good way).:D
Hope all is well with everyone and your all getting full nights sleep:D.
Totally agree that school choice is very important. I'm not a parent but a good friend of mine asked for input in making her decision for her son a few years ago. We talked a lot. What it came down to in the end was not about cold league tables, exam results, and general number crunching.
The two big issues in the end were that the chosen school nipped all bullying in the bud before it could get started and, this was very important, they worked to help the child maintain a decent level self esteem. You could feel that this was true too.
The conclusion was that a happy child is a child that will learn well and feel good. I'm sure we all know/have known people who are academically excellent yet they are as miserable as hell and put others down because they themselves lack in self esteem. I'm sure that we all know/have known other who may be a bit more academically challenged but are very happy and exude happiness to those around them. Of course, some people hit the jackpot and do well academically AND are delightful people too.
I take the view that a happy person who has self esteem is far better equipped to deal with the occasional crisis that life throws up than an academic whose self esteem may be not so great.
Perhaps I was influenced by my own time at school. I was often bullied because my self esteem was low and I adopted a "victim mentality". Academically I was fine though - but I got out a year before o levels (you could in those days) because the stress was too much (other reasons too but that is way outside the scope of this thread).
The child I mentioned earlier loves going to school. I hated it, dreaded it, feared it.0 -

What you have said above is sooo true! I was very happy at my primary school and did great with my studies, top of the class etc.
Then I joined secondary school and was bullied every day for a year and a half. My grades slipped from A's to D's. I started making excuses for not going to school and when that stopped working, I flatly refused to go anymore. My self esteem plummetted and it took a very long time to regain some of it.
The school's attitude was appalling. They had seen most of the incidents and failed to intervene, even when I was in tears. And when my parents confronted them their response was 'we're not willing to do anything about it'!!!
Thankfully, my parents took me out of that school right there and then and found me a place in another, much better school. Bullying wasn't tolerated, and rarely happened because of the zero tolerance approach anyway and I managed to raise my grade's back up to A's within the year.
Needless to say the !!!! school no longer exists as it consistently received awful reports, other parents were removing their kids at an alarming rate and after failing to improve, they were closed down.February wins: Theatre tickets0 -
