I'll join you.:)
I learned how to crochet in March this year and I make Amigurumis. I taught my self by goggling and borrowing a few books from the library. I got loads of printed patterns and links to free patterns if you are interested. You can also check out my blog http://greenpixey.blogspot.com/ If you scroll down the page a bit and look on the left hand side, just click on the Amigurumi link and you can see all the ones I made
I still consider myself to be a novice. I got the hang of making "gurumis" but normal crocheting sometimes is a minefield for me.
I'm working on a baby blanket at the moment but I find that Amigurumis are quicker so I swap in between them and doing both.
Have made quite a few Amigurumis that I hope to sell on craft fairs this Christmas and some to give away as Christmas presents.
Also trying to purchase some glow-in-the-dark yarn from USA now to make some ghosts for Halloween.
Would love to see a picture of your blanket!!0 -
Greenpixey - I've just been looking on your blog - I adore your amigurumis, are they easy to do? I would love to try and make one, but I have never crocheted before, would it cost a lot to get started???
Owens - well done on teaching yourself!!!0 -

Thank you.
I went to a secondhand shop and bougth a 3mm crochet hook for 10p and some yarn for £1.50 in Shaws, borrowed books from the library and searched for free patterns on internet. Most of it is basic crochet. ie. slipstitch and single stitch.WOW you only learned in march !! thats fantastic your stuff is lovely, can u recommend somthing for me to have a go at thats not too difficult ?
See if your library got any of these books

there are loads of other Amigurumi books but these ones i found great, explaining everything in detail. Got all the basics covered in the beginning of the book to show you how to crochet as well
or search on internet tutorials on how to make amigurumis/ crochet.

Try this pattern out, it is fairly easy, you need, a 3mm- 4mm hook, two different coloured yarn and a needle to sew the pieces together

2)Yarn amount is sufficient for multiples of Pinwheel Candy.
Inner Swirl
With A, ch 31.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.
Outer Swirl
With B, ch 51.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st across.

I apparently am suffering from OCD - over crochet disorder lol. I crochet hours a day as I am my OH's carer. Some days we don't leave the house and as I am on call to him 24/7 I crochet as you dont lose your place as easily as knitting. Recent successes include geisha dolls and soft toy balls - all done in the amigarumi style. this week I perfected little crochet houses which I am hoping will sell at a farmers market next month. Everybody in the family has a throw or blankie made by me and of course scarves. I also make premmie baby stuff for a charity. There are literally millions of free patterns around on the web so i dont pay for them any more. Hopefully will post some pics asapClearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
Greenpixey - thanks for the sweet pattern, I think I'll try that first. I wanted to have a go at making this do you think it would be okay for a beginner;
http://www.hookandneedles.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/brainslug.pdf
also (sorry another question), but I'll have to buy my supplies online (probably ebay) - what sort of yarn do I look for - is it just any type????
Owens - can't wait to see a pic of your blanket!
Ginnyknit - I like the sound of your geisha dolls and houses!!!0 -
Ginnyknit - could you share your pattern for the geisha girls my little girl would love this, also any pics please0

The pattern you picked looks fairly easy and straight forward.
Yarn I would suggest DK (double knit) Try searching on ebay for job lot, odd balls, yarn remanants, doll/toy making yarn
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/25-Odd-Balls-Knitting-wool-Yarn-Doll-Toy-making_W0QQitemZ360181362650QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Crafts_Knitting_Crochet_EH?hash=item53dc7b6fda&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
Here is one you might want to buy. It's a good way to start out, you get loads of different colours and if you make Amigurumis you don't need a lot of yarn.0
