Ask them for a final response so you can take it to the Ombudsman but while you are here.
Are any of the priority debt arrears being paid off or part of a payment plan?
Do you still use the account?

still have account but wages go into different bank account A & L (same company now they also agreed hardship and refunded most of charges)

paying a little off extra each month
on a debt management plan for unsecured debts

we are in this state as i have been made redundant twice in last 2 years

I apologise for asking the question but did the A&L payout cover existing arrears?
    Or what happened to it?

I am gonna clarify this but Nationwide are pretty much by the book. Did you incur charges on the account during the period of unemployment and did the charges increase the arrears as a result?
