I think my biggest issue is that a big part of the job is explaining systems to other people, and at the moment I don't know those systems and would have to learn them myself first. And if I can't communicate well at the interview, they're obviously not going to think I can do it in a work situation.

Okay, then thats what you say - tho you have to translate it a bit, put it in work-acceptable language. But you also have to show them your abilities to learn new systems, and to communicate systems that you *do* know. Is there anything that qualifies under those descriptions that would be acceptable to talk about in an interview (with "acceptable" I'm thinking of some of my own interests - science fiction seems to attract the label "geek", for instance, so for me it would be "genealogy" etc etc).

    Hope that helps.

It does help, thanks. There are things that I've done at work that would come under that - just feels like my brain is rushing and I can't get anything pinned down into some sort of sense. I'm also convinced that they will have internal people who already understand the systems so it's a waste of time :o

Interviews are nonsense really aren't they - you can't prove anything about what you've done before - this one does have a test beforehand mind you, which could be a good thing.

Interviews are horrible, no two ways about it. Completely false - but its the only way we've currently got of assessing people - I *know* you're bored where you are, and this is what has to be done if you're going to move on.

Oh boy - that sounds *so* like what I'm saying to myself about moving and about finding other work. No wonder your interview has been ringing bells.

Never mind - only a few more hours to go, then *loads* of time off.

You're right it has to be done - no way round it really, nobody's going to just hand me a job!

Do you think this is good as an example of learning systems quickly - last year I helped out with the student enrolment at work, which meant I had to learn how to input new records - I had a one-day training course and then about a week of practise on the test system before the actual enrolment day.. on the day I enrolled approx 50 students and had no errors (we have people checking the enrolments in another dept on the day who come back to you if you've made a mistake).. eurgh I think it sounds like terrible showing off!

Lovely outfit - and yes, thats exactly the sort of thing, the enrolling thing - and if you translate "showing off" as "displaying" - then yes, thats exactly it! In fact, I'd fluff it up a bit more, to be honest - you say a week's practise. Did you do nothing but practise enrolment during that week? I bet you didn't! Think about how much/how little time you practised each day, and frankly, tone it down a little - if you practised for an hour, tell them it was 30 minutes, that sort of thing. Its only expected.

Good luck! Hope we talk before you go for it!
