Ok so your Ex put down a £500 deposit on the vehicle, he has then driven it since Jan 09 so 6 months plus, so 212 plus days, so that works out he has paid £2.36 per day. A hell of a lot cheaper than hiring a car or getting cabs. He needs to understand that he has had an excellent deal.
How many payments have you had to pay because he has not given you the money as per your agreement? To get rid of him I would tell him to give you the missed payments and you'll give back the deposit or if he would prefer you could use the deposit to pay off the unpaid amounts.
Also check out the car insurance thing, I'm not 100% sure but I think you can get in trouble if you say you are the owner of a vehicle when you are not. I also think but again not 100% sure that you cannot insure a car in your name if you do not own it. Is the insurance in your name with him as a named driver, if it is tell him you are cancelling him off the policy so he will be uninsured.

You CAN insure a vehicle you don't own. On paper I own my husbands car (long story - he forgot his ID when we picked it up from the dealers... I had mine - ergo the car ended up being registered in my name - men lol) and we haven't got round to changing it over - he's never had a problem insuring it and always states he's not "the registered owner"... I think they do ask who is and what relationship you have with them etc tho...

    Whether this only applies because we're hubby/wife/spouses - that I don't know :)

no, my friend has insurance on his car and the car is registered to another friend (he is buying it from him and paying weekly). his insurance is higher, but it is completely possible to do- his policy says he can drive any car

I wonder if the reason my hubby doesn't is because I'm named on the policy then? It's definitely in his name and I'm only named. It states I'm "spouse" and I own the vehicle... oh the fun world of insurance lol
OP - unless he's paid a minor fortune for insurance then chances are he's put himself as the registered keeper in the policy... and if he has... then it's "obtaining insurance by deception" - aka fraud :)

If you do get it back using a key you have, do you feel it might be wise to keep it in a friend's garage till you sell it, just to prevent any tantrum related 'accidents' happening to it and devauling it.;)

It looks better for when you come to sale as you can say it's been lady owned and driven the last "X" years ;)

I don't really understand why lady owned is a benefit when selling a car. Do people really consider this that much of a plus point when buying a vehicle? You never see it listed as 'male owner'.
