If you do manage to get the car back i would seriously consider getting the locks changed as it could well "disappear" never to be seen again .............

........ex could quite easily just sell it on and you would still be left with finance payments.

Also check your household / car insurance policies as they may well cover the replacement locks on a car which the owner has "lost" the keys...............

and then i would just sell it on asap and get a different car as ex would then have no claim on that

I would also photocopy all the docs you have proving what you paid and what he has paid and offer to pay him any difference( if there is any in his favour) and then you will have done the "honourable" thing and hopefully that will be the end of it.

    Good luck

happened to me - my car all paid for he would not give it over. Kept seeing it parked in the street never moving so checked with DVLA (thought he might have sold it!) confirmed still in my name, got a replacement v5, advised the police I was going to take it away and then went to a garage and gave them the v5, letter from the police and they uplifted it on the back of a trailer. (£1,500 of repairs to the engine then sold it) ex sent police to my door after about 3 months saying car had been stolen, showed them the paperwork and they went away- hope they did him for wasting police time.

In your situation I would be concerned that, if this was a new car, and you do get it back and sell it there is likely still to be a fair bit to pay to pay off the finance (if only £500 put down) is he likely to pay this? - I would be tempted to get a redemption figure for the finance then tell him if he wants the car then that is the price.
