I've used the self-scan tills at Tesco a couple of times, but won't use them again. Tesco make big enough profits, I am not about to help them to bigger ones by scanning my own groceries!

I agree. One Tesco Metro had 3 staff behind the counter doing nothing - ie chatting about their weekends - and as I approached the tills they all walked away and one staff member pointed me to the self scan till.

I got the distinct feeling those tills are so some members of staff can get paid for doing less! Not impressed.

I find it annoying that it won't let you get points for re using bags...i put my bag for life bag in the bagging area to start packing that (as had 6pints milk etc in basket), and kept beeping-unexpected item in bagging area.....

....basically the shop assistant told me i had to use the normal bags, pay and then repack my stuff into the bag for life bags afterwards-what a pain-also would then have to queue up to get points for using the bags added on, or the schools vouchers if spent more than £10. Seems more hassle than its worth!

theyre a good idea but they are kind of flawed, with the schools vouchers could the till not print of a slip on the bottom of the receipt saying "you have collected X amount of schools vouchers" and you tear it off and give it to the school

Not all of them are this up to date - ours didn't take pins at first, but now there is the option of entering your pin. Maybe people complained?

I couldn't agree more! Until Tesco give me a discount for saving them a cashier's wages I won't be using them. If I wanted to work on a Tesco checkout I would!

Funny you should say that - sometimes the queues at ours are so long that an assistant comes along to pack. At the 'normal' one next to it the assistant scans while the customer packs...

Our Wilkinson has self service tills and have an on screen option to use bags for life so I can't see how it can't be implemented in the supermarket ones.

I can't get on with that - I pack a bag as I scan, then put in the trolley - it is far too annoying letting it build up to a large pile - what happens if you do a really big load?, I pack as I go!

You can't do that any more  I thought I would be really efficient yesterday. I started scanning things and then immediately packing them into my own bags. The machine immediately objected to this, and I needed an assistant. She said that you had to place each item onto the conveyor as it then weighed it. I suspect that this is a way of checking that people have scanned each item. It took twice a slong as normal. Never again.

I do a lot of work in tesco and im sure these machines dont give out till spits. Of all the times i have forced myself to use one for a sandwich and the like i have never got a till spit, but i do get one every other time i take my purchase to a normal checkout.
