Presumably it is breaking the Terms and conditions of the coupons ( although obviously not doing Somerfield any harm)
I was very daring a couple of days ago, and even used the £5 whiskey coupon, it worked, and hence treated myself to a 'free' bottle of my favourite wine. But, although I love a bargin, I am an 'honest' person, and walked out of the store dreading a hand on the shoulder  - esp after the till asked for SA authorisation of the coupons scanned (I had already 'posted' them in the slot as it had asked me to) - luckily she was distracted, and quickly keyed her authorisation code in, never registering I had used such a large value coupon.
Does Tesco accounts dept actually tie up the coupons to the items bought, and even back to the card holder who used them.....or am I being really paranoid ?
One of my local Tescos used to have big banners outside saying they accepted Asda and Sainsbury coupons, but that has disappeared. Have they changed their official policy.
A very friendly SA at Asda actually volunteered to take a Somerfield coupon which fell out of my purse a while back :T , but Tesco SA are often not happy to accept even their own vouchers.
Has anybody had an embarrasing incident or been 'challenged' whilst scanning coupons from Somerfield etc ?
I felt a bit better when Tesco announced their obscene profits yesterday, my little 'scam' is obviously not going to bankrupt them !! I would just feel braver if I knew I wasn't risking being hauled off by security, and interveiwed by the local CID !! I don't mind if the coupons don't scan, or if I'm even treated like an imbecile as they point out "Those arn't ours", but to be treated as a criminal.....!!0 -
cheesylou wrote:I think they're quite good these days as you have to put the item in the bagging area (for it to weigh) so that you have bought what it says you have! I don't think it lets you proceed until you put it to be weighed. We have them also at Marks and Spencer! Very handy until they break down!
I can't get on with that - I pack a bag as I scan, then put in the trolley - it is far too annoying letting it build up to a large pile - what happens if you do a really big load?, I pack as I go!
I don't like machines telling me how to organise produce.
The scan and go used to work for me at Safeway and use it at Sainsbury with no problems. An average day in my life:hello: :mad: :coffee::coffee::coffee::T:rotfl: :rotfl:

Asda take coupons if they stock the item - they simply send it back to the manufacturer for a refund and I guess the people who buy the items without a coupon will tally with the people who don't.
Tesco will only accept them if you buy the item - the barcode can be recognised against what you have just bought.

Also if you're collecting the computers for school tokens you then have to queue at the customer services to get your tokens which is a bit of a pain. We had these about 10 years ago in Safeways in Ayr (when I lived there) and they were good for a while but then as usual people started abusing the system by not scanning every item they had and so they quickly got taken away.
I didn't know this. I just realised last week that i was missing out on the tokens. i didn't know you could still get them if you used the self service till. Thanks.
What bugs me is if I have 10 items or less and I use the smaller till (the one without the moving belt). It doesn't matter how quick I am it always starts to tell me to put my item in the bag. I'm not slow.
I had my mum with me one time and she was packing for me and kept removing stuff from the bags to make more room and I must have had the assistant over about 5 times to help us. I kept telling my mum to leave it but she insisted she was just helping.
My 10 and 13yo's fight over who gets to scan the stuff.0 -
I like the self scan tills but there is often as big a queue at them as at the regular tills. Best system Ive used is the self scan at Waitrose where you take a hand held scanner around with you, pack your shopping as you pull it from the shelves and just pay at the machine or counter as you leave. I don't find Waitrose so pricey either, they have good offers and a better range of veggie goodies for me.The best things in life are NOT free - but they sure are cheaper with MSE!:j0

I got over £5 off in coupons and I didn't buy ANY of the items!
Although my local 'megatesco' has stopped accepting Internet coupons (coz apparently 'anyone could set up a website and make these vouchers'). the other smaller tesco will accept them no probs. I haven't tried the humungous tesco up the road from work but as I have allthe vouchers in the car ready to go i may try this week...just in case you need to know:

The self serve tills at Tesco have an option on them for you to type in bar codes if the item doesnt scanm including Reduced to Clear. So you shouldnt have to wait for a member of staff to do this for you, simply hit the 'Key in Code' options on the screen then rattle in the number0

I have been using these in Tesco's for about a year. If I do a big shop I don't tend to use them as it's quite slow scanning and then packing but if it's just a few items I do.
If I have DD with me then using the self scan is compulsory. She loves them. She scans and I pack. She is brill at finding loose items, keying in codes etc. I don't like the fact it doesn't ask for pin no. with debit card though and it always calls an assistant for vouchers over £1. They open up the voucher bit and check them. There is an assistant located at the end of the self scan tills just to monitor them and to give out school vouchers.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)

I also find the self service tills is a great way to get rid of the jar of loose change every month, as you can pay part cash, part debit card and not feel embarrassed doing it! Well, as long as there is no one standing behind you while you load the thing with your 1 and 2 pences! And also far better than using coin star!0

I used these in my local Tesco and have also used the same thing in an Asda once.
Now I worked out that it expects a weight to know you have placed something into a bag. I suddenly thought if I have one 2L bottle of 20p tesco coke and 5 bottles of £1.20 coka cola I could keep scanning the tesco one and put the expensive one in the bag. That's a £5 saving! Im too honest to try it but with 24hr stores who is watching you at 12am in the morning?

Any comments or views are my personal comments and opinions and not those of my employer. Oh and I might (on the odd occasion) get something wrong, if I do then I do apologise in advance!!0
