Tesco self serve tills

  • I've used the self-scan tills at Tesco a couple of times, but won't use them again. Tesco make big enough profits, I am not about to help them to bigger ones by scanning my own groceries! You also can't get green points (for bag re-use) at the self-scan tills. And they are useless for scanning reduced-price items. I'll stick to the friendly smiles of my favourite cashiers rather than the annoying "unexpected item on conveyor" which I always seem to get from the self-scan!

    Hi everyone,

As this is more of a shopping than Old Style thread I've moved it over to the Shop but Don't Drop board.

I was recently impressed with the pay at pump system they have recently put in to my nearest tesco service station. You put in your credit/debit card in the slot at the pump, enter the pin, pump the petrol and voila - your card gets charged and you can drive away. No queing at the kiosk and giving more money to Tesco by doing impulse purchases (hmmmm chocolates.....)

The only issue would be when scammers start to make use of this system in some way or another but would be difficult as the pumps are always under surveillance from the guy at the kiosk (unless of course he is in on it too :))

  • Ive only used random money off vouchers at the self scan tills and only dared to do one at any shop. (Yeah Im a scardey cat :rotfl: )

Do they accept sainsbury's money off vouchers as well as Somerfield ones? I used to save a fortune when asda would take ANY vouchers by using both these kind of money off vouchers but sadly they stopped taking them and I haven'y bothered with vouchers for ages.

I do my main shop on line using codes on here of course but there is always the odd thing you need to pop to the shops for and thats when self scan and couponing could come into its own. For me anyhow.:D

    Except you do.

I've used both ASDA and Tesco self service tills (they're both identical anyway) and they always as for your PIN. In fact, they have the exact same card reader as the 'normal' tills.

Now I worked out that it expects a weight to know you have placed something into a bag. I suddenly thought if I have one 2L bottle of 20p tesco coke and 5 bottles of £1.20 coka cola I could keep scanning the tesco one and put the expensive one in the bag. That's a £5 saving! Im too honest to try it but with 24hr stores who is watching you at 12am in the morning?
That would be the CCTV! ;)

I couldn't agree more! Until Tesco give me a discount for saving them a cashier's wages I won't be using them. If I wanted to work on a Tesco checkout I would!

I find it annoying that it won't let you get points for re using bags...i put my bag for life bag in the bagging area to start packing that (as had 6pints milk etc in basket), and kept beeping-unexpected item in bagging area.....

....basically the shop assistant told me i had to use the normal bags, pay and then repack my stuff into the bag for life bags afterwards-what a pain-also would then have to queue up to get points for using the bags added on, or the schools vouchers if spent more than £10. Seems more hassle than its worth!

I love the self-scans - it combines my love of silly gadgetry with my manly desire to not queue at all (for some reason all the old dears use the human-powered tills).

However; after several months of happy operation in our local Tescos (a huge 24 hour job) they took them out and replaced them with '10 items or less' tills. I guess the tesco's being in a dodgy area means people were getting away with loads of things (underage alcohol and free items, for two). Boo.
