(ALthough apparently it doesn't work for super muscly athletes so they come out obese when they're not.)
Aha, that's it, I'm just a cunningly disguised super muscley athelete! Marvellous, now, since that's sorted where are those biscuits? Us athletes need to keep our energy up *beam*Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -

Awww Caz it's one thing after another!
You can't compare a bird in the wardrobe to a sudden family house move thoughwe want regular updates on that please, I'm anxious for you!
Have you confirmed that she can really ask you to move with a straight 1 month notice? I think it was MrsT who pointed out that usually landlord has to give 2 months, that may be different in Scotland though...
What can/can't the council do for you? How much would housing benefit help you afford a place in the same area? Etc etc. Good luck!0 -
Hiya,
My online access to the british journal of Obs and Gynae is back!
Susan, you asked me to look out for anything on the reasons for hyperemesis.
Brace yourself: here is my summary- hope you find it useful!
Key: hCG= human chorionic gonadotrophin, the hormone which is produced very early in pregnancy and is used as the detector of a pregnancy for all urine testing kits.
I’ve tried to define any other medicalish terms as I’ve gone along… Not cause I don't think you understand, but maybe this forum has other readers who might appreciate a lack of jargon!
What causes hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)?
It is more common in multiple pregnancy (twins or more). Women with HGin a previous pregnancy are much more likely to have it again with future pregnancies.
Hormonal changes
Women with HGoften have high hCG levels that cause transient hyperthyroidism. (an over active thyroid, which only lasts for a brief time- ie during pregnancy) hCG can stimulate the thyroid gland thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) receptor. hCG levels peak in the first trimester. Some women with HGappear to have clinical hyperthyroidism. In transient hyperthyroidism of hyperemesis gravidarum, thyroid function normalizes by the middle of the second trimester without antithyroid treatment. Clinically overt hyperthyroidism and thyroid antibodies are usually absent.
The severity of nausea appears to be related to the degree of thyroid stimulation. hCG may not be independently involved in the etiology of HG but may be indirectly involved by its ability to stimulate the thyroid. For these patients, hCG levels were linked to increased levels of immunoglobulin M, complement, and lymphocytes. So, an immune process may be responsible. Critics of this theory say that nausea and vomiting are not usual symptoms of hyperthyroidism, signs of biochemical hyperthyroidism are not universal in cases of hyperemesis gravidarum, and some studies have failed to correlate the severity of symptoms with biochemical abnormalities.
Previous intolerance to oral contraceptives is associated with nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. I wondered if this had ever been an issue?
Gastrointestinal dysfunction
The stomach pacemaker causes rhythmic peristaltic contractions of the stomach. Abnormal myoelectric activity may cause a variety of gastric dysrhythmias, including tachygastrias and bradygastrias.(too quick or too slow stomach activity) Gastric dysrhythmias have been associated with morning sickness. The presence of dysrhythmias was associated with nausea while normal myoelectrical activity was present in the absence of nausea. Mechanisms that cause gastric dysrhythmias include elevated oestrogen or progesterone levels, thyroid disorders, etc. Many of these factors are present in early pregnancy. These factors are hypothesized to be more severe and/or the gastrointestinal tract more sensitive in those who develop hyperemesis gravidarum.
Hepatic (liver) dysfunction (in mum or fetus)
Liver disease occurs in almost 50% of patients with hyperemesis gravidarum. Impairment of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation may play a role in the pathogenesis of maternal liver disease associated with hyperemesis gravidarum. It has been suggested that women with FAO defects develop HG associated with liver disease while carrying fetuses with FAO defects due to accumulation of fatty acids in the placenta and subsequent generation of reactive oxygen species. Alternatively, it is possible that starvation leading to peripheral lipolysis and increased load of fatty acids in maternal-fetal circulation, combined with reduced capacity of the mitochondria to oxidize fatty acids in mothers with FAO defects, can also cause HG and liver injury while carrying nonaffected fetuses.
Lipid (fats) alterations
Jarnfelt-Samsioe et al found higher levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, and phospholipids in women with HG compared with matched, nonvomiting, pregnant and nonpregnant controls. This may be related to the abnormalities in hepatic (ie Liver) function in pregnant women.
Your liver function could be checked prior?
Infection
Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium found in the stomach that may aggravate nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. Studies have found conflicting evidence of the role of H pylori in hyperemesis gravidarum. Recent studies in the United States have not shown association with hyperemesis gravidarum. However, persistent nausea and vomiting beyond the second trimester may be due to an active peptic ulcer caused by H pylori infection.
H pylori is prevalent in people who have stomach ulcers or in their blood relatives. This is perhaps something you could look into before a second pregnancy?
Vestibular and olfaction (smelling!)
heightened olfactory system may be a contributing factor to nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Many pregnant women report the smell of cooking food, particularly meats, as triggers to nausea. Striking similarities between HG and motion sickness suggest that subclinical vestibular disorders may account for some cases of hyperemesis gravidarum.
Do you get travel or motion sickness or any inner ear problems like vertigo?
Biochemical research
Immunoglobulins C3 and C4 and lymphocyte counts are significantly higher in women with hyperemesis gravidarum. T-helper 1/T-helper 2 balance is decreased in women with hyperemesis gravidarum, which results in increased humoral immunity. Increased fetal DNA has been found in the maternal plasma of women with hyperemesis gravidarum, and the increased DNA is speculated to be derived from trophoblasts that have been destroyed by the hyperactive maternal immune system. Thus, HGmay be mediated by immunologic aberrations in pregnancy.
Psychological issues
Some cases of HG may represent psychiatric illnesses. They may occur under situations of stress or ambivalence surrounding the pregnancy. It appears that psychological responses can interact and exacerbate the physiology of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Most likely, physiological changes associated with pregnancy interact with each woman's psychologic state and cultural values. However, HG is usually not the result of a mental illness. It is frequently the cause of, as opposed to the result of, psychological stress.
Hope that helps someone

Oh Caz - I read the first of your posts last night, but haven't caught up on the rest. I'm sure everyone else has told you to go speak to the council house people and see if they can help and to check with CAB about the notice period. So I will send love and sympathy and dodgy hugs instead :grouphug:.
I sent off 2 job applications yesterday, then found another fab one to apply for, except they need to know my sickness record for the last 3 years. I have it for my current job, but at work, and no idea for my previous job. Need to call them, but I've just discovered Izzy has smeared marmite all over my phone. The joys of motherhood. :rotfl:Isabella Molly born 14th January 2009

Strangely I only had HG in my second pregnancy with low HGC levels. But DS2 was just the pregnancy from hell.
I was bad and let DS1 walk to school on his own (he's been asking since schools went back) because I was feeding Amber and he would be late. Bad mummy!! But it does take the stress off in the morning.
Going to drop off DS2 and have a nice coffee and maybe a fruit scone and even a little walk down the town. Not spending any money cos I'm skint for the rest of the month.
Caz, sorry about the bird! Are you laughing about it yet??0 -
