Wait until you have used them for a claim before you state how great they are, their whole company ethos is about saving money.
  • I thought I would post an update as to what happened to me regarding this situation.
Firstly, my insurance was NOT invalidated, despite what many people thought (including myself). In fact I received a very acceptable sum from my insurance company once the care was deemed a write off. I received the money promptly and was very pleased with the amount. I was able to buy another car and have a bit of money left over.

Also I received a letter from the police saying that on this occasion I would not receive a fine for forgetting to have the MOT. I was extremely delighted to get this most unexpected news. I certainly won't forget to renew the MOT in future.

I guess my situation turned out positively, but I did have sleepless nights worrying about what would happen.

Hi I thought I would pop back to this thread and give an update on what has happened to my claim so far
After Quinn Insurance turned our claim down because our car had no MOT, I wrote a letter to them like everyone on this thread told me to I did this and on Friday just before the 8 weeks deadline was up I got a phone call from Quinn saying they had received my letter of complaint and would be sending an inspector out to check the car over for the damage, we told them we had the car fixed and was told to have all the bills for fixing the damage ready for the inspector.
The inspector came yesterday and checked the car repairs over and also checked every inch of the car to try and see if the accident was caused by the car being unroadworthy he checked every tyre and tried to say we had changed the back tyre since we had had the accident which was wrong and I had to show him the bill from the garage for all the new tyres. It looks like Quinn again is looking for any excuse to not have to pay up.
Lots of photos were taken of the car and pictures of the bill for repairs and the new MOT certificate which we got as soon as the car came back from having repairs and passed with flying colours.
The inspector is sending his report to Quinn and again I have to play the waiting game to see what is going to happen.
I know it’s not that much of an update but I wanted to keep posting to let everyone know the outcome of this as a lot of people still think NO MOT means NO INSURANCE.
I would also like to thank everyone for all there fantastic advice they gave me
And I will post again as soon as I hear anything.

  • I am happy to give an update, LOL. I know there are many people like me who do genuinely forget to renew the MOT, and then sod's law...after not being involved in any accidents, DO get involved in one. I worried myself sick that my insurance would be invalid -AND THIS WAS BACKED UP BY COUNTLESS PEOPLE...apart from a few on here who I would like to thank very much for pretty much telling it like it is.

In short, your insurance is not invalidated automatically if you do not have a vaild MOT certificate. Also I was told that I would get points and a fine on my licence by the police, but as I said, I did not. Even I am gobsmacked that they let me off, but maybe they did because they believed me and know I won't be so stupid again.

I have subscribed to an email service which reminds me of the MOT renewal date. Best wishes everyone!

Thanks for updating us spangles30 and ellionic.

I think this thread will now be a useful resource when people who incorrectly claim that no MOT = no insurance; and for those looking to insure with Quinn.

Probably not, even if they do we will still have the people who state Insurance is invalidated by not having tax and my favourite that Insurance does not apply for accidents on private ground

Call it a lucky guess but by any chance did the "Inspector" read local manager (Often unqualified) whose job is target driven to obtain the best deal on claims settlements pay a lot of attention to your tyres, lights and mirrors?

    Duty of care
12 You or any insured person must

make sure the vehicle is kept in a roadworthy condition
and, if necessary, has a valid MOT certificate

    For example:
    • the tyre-tread depth must be within the legal limits;
    • all lights and mirrors installed on the vehicle must be
    working properly; and
    • the vehicle’s brakes (front and back) must be working
    correctly

(The mirror one always makes me laugh)
