Wow. I was about to ask for a quote from Quin but I think i'll leave it. This thread has confused me as if an MOT isn't a legal requirement , why have one?

It is a legal requirement, (like road tax).

But not having either is (usually!) no impediment to an insurance claim!

Jeez! How complicated for a non-driver. So , if you don't have a valid MOT it is ok insurance wise? The op sounds like she made a genuine mistake but I wouldn't want to be in an accident with a car that hadn't had an MOT in years.

    Trying to put it concisely:

In terms of insurance an MOT is neither here nor there.

If your vehicle was unroadworthy and the unroadworthiness caused or contributed to the loss, then your insurer can legitimately reject your claim and if necessary make you pay for any third party losses for which you are liable.

If your vehicle was roadworthy (or if your vehicle was unroadworthy but the unroadworthiness did not cause or contribute to the loss) then your insurer cannot use the lack of MOT to reject your claims.

The main lesson from this thread is read and understand the policy requirements. (Rather than it's (usually) ok insurance wise to drive a car with no MOT (it's still a criminal offence).

These days insurers put a lot of effort into ensuring they only pay out on claims when they have to!

So...technically speaking you don't need an MOT as long as you don't crash the car?! I'm a feminist but think I need a husband to sort all of this out:o:rotfl:

Don’t know about technically but legally you need MOT, tax & insurance but they are all independent and not having one doesn’t affect the validity of the others

I've been with Quinn on an ROI policy for >2 years now. No problems at all.

As long as you keep paying them money, you will have "no problems at all".

But you don't know how good an insurance company is until you have to claim.

Never claimed for an accident, but have used their breakdown service a few times - excellent service. Also when my suitcase was stolen in Spain, containing my car keys, Quinn were excellent in offering either to tow my car home from Dublin airport to Waterford, put us in a hotel for the night or pay for a hire car.

They have always been courteous, friendly and extremely helpful. Though I accept I haven't experienced how they are in dealing with accident claims.
