  • Lets move onto the very very rewarding CTC system. A couple out of work with no earned income will get £2235pa per child and an additional £545 for family element.

    Evidence here.....

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/rates/taxcredits.htm

    £2235+£2235+£545 = £5015. £5015/52 = £96.44pw

Does CTC mean child tax credits , if so I thought you only got that if you worked?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Well, we'll never know whether it's halved or not because you don't seem to want to back up your statement with even guesstimates or vague figures.

If you're not saying she's lazy, what are you saying?

Jesus Harry, you know how to flame.

Not gonna bother with you anymore on this subject as you are seriously twisting to get a rise.

You simply cannot half the money because they do not have a partner. That is one of the stupidest things I have seen on this board.

No, you get tax credits if you don't work too. That's the thing I forgot the name off when I said earlier I had forgotten the name of something!!

Graham, you seem to be the one trying to cause an argument or 'flaming' with your "stupidest thing I have seen on this board", "Wouldnt have to half it at all. Thats ridiculous. " and use of the sarky smilie (). I feel that I have been very polite in my responses.

I'm simply asking you to provide a bit more information, to "put meat on the bones" if you will, of a statement that a single mum you know receives £23k per annum. WHy do you get so cross?
"I can hear you whisperin', children, so I know you're down there. I can feel myself gettin' awful mad. I'm out of patience, children. I'm coming to find you now." - Harry Powell, Night of the Hunter, 1955.
  • But your 'pal' is a single Mum, so you will have to halve the amount you quoted because they were calculated for a couple. She won't receive JSA because she isn't job seeking, she is a SAHM. Everyone with children receives Child benefit (even premiership footballers) so that's not a benefit resulting from her 'lazyness'.

p.s. I'm not 'arguing' about it, I'm just seeking clarification of your statement. I don't think it's out of order to ask for details when someone supplies financial information such as you did. I have seen you ask many times for people to back up their statements.

I think that GD explained it very well and gave you much more than 'vague' figures.

I too am sick of hearing about people living in 'poverty' and how terrible it is to 'survive' on benefits.

There are plenty of people working long hours every week and 'surviving' on less.

Everywhere I go it is slammed in my face about how things would be free if I were on benefits! school dinners alone would get me £16.50 pw if I were on benefits!

Graham hasn't explained anything, he just posted a rant from someone else that was nothing to do with the discussion we were having (about his single Mum friend with 2 kids and their £23k income).

I also hear about people 'coining it in' on benefits but everyone I know works so I have no personal experience other than hearing the sort of statements made by Graham and now yourself that they 'know people who earn a fortune' on state handouts. I'm not necessarily disputing this, I just want to know real facts rather than blanket statements. Is it so bad to want to make your mind up on a subject based on real evidence rather than from unsupported generalisations?

Try putting in some made up figures into www.entitledto.com

It doesnt matter what was posted, it quite clearly gave figures, which are correct, which showed how someone on benefits could be much better off than someone who wasnt. A single mother could easily be earning the equivilent of £23K - it doesnt take a genious to work that out.

When my OH and I first started our business we were able to claim loads in CTC and WTC - we were much better off than we are now that we are earning above the threshold.

This country is in a mess and something needs to be done. The only people who dont agree are the ones rolling in it and laughing at the system. I admit I was happy to take the money when it was offered, but that doesnt make it right - its the system that needs an overhaul, not the people claiming the benefits.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Sometime ago I wrote about someone who had come to me for help. From the outside the life looked way better than average. Does ''the Season'' every year, kids at top public schools, lives on country estate, holidays in ''society'' destinations. Country estate cottage is paid by HB, income is all benefits (and debt), schools are 100% scholarships, holidays are staying with friends. GD raises a good point: the school fees, though for the children's benefit and (arguably) not the parents', are well over £100k per year worth: something that would not be affordable if this person came off benefits. Incidently, the mother is classeclassed as full time mother (though this is coming to an end, I think related to age of the children, though cannot really remember if that's correct) despite the children living not at home for term time. An extreme example though, I don't pretend otherwise: but I have to admit, part of me was shouting inside that life was unfair while I was helping this person and encouraging them to see someone actually qualified to better help them with their debt problem.
