At the risk of introducing some accurate numbers into the discussion

Oh and before we get one of the standard set of loons claiming that these are government figures and therefore fiddled, they're not. The methodology is published and scrutinised and the numbers are not produced in any way under government influence. They're used to inform policy decisions, not for PR,just like GDP numbers are.0 -

Accurate????
At least with Supermarket stats everyone has to eat & if you can work out average consumption you can work out population to as much a degree as your average per person consumption.
In fact their data would be far more superior to that of the Goverment because people eating is a necessary for survival but paying tax or claiming benefits isnt...Not Again0 -

All government statistics are fiddled.
There is no reason why they wouldn't be.

Whilst I'm not saying government stats are always correct, can you please just give me a quick synopsis of how on earth you would begin to work out the number of people living in the UK from the stats from Tesco's tills? Just a few steps detailing how you'd go about it would be great.0 -

Ha ha Cleaver.
A test. Love it.
I am sure a statisticain will be along shortly to satisfy your need because I really can be bothered.
BUT to be brief, as you well know (if you know anything that is), Tesco (& all the other supermarkets) spend millions each year working out their market share.
If you could work out the consumption of the number of loaves bread, pints of milk or eggs (for example) a typical person eats in a year a quick calculation would give you the population & a 1m margin in % terms is a VERY BIG MARGIN OF ERROR.
You could cross reference this with as many products as you want if you wanted to verify the accuracy because basing it on 1 product would be a tad silly. So would basing the calculation on a fad food. I am sure Tesco are not silly.
Anyways nice try.Not Again0 -

I've thanked your post as it seems to prove that working out how much milk someone drinks, dividing by the amount of milk sold and coming up with a 77 million estimate for the number of people living here is stupid.0 -
I think it's called sampling.
It is a legitimate statistical analysis technique.
Not saying it's accurate or anything, though."The problem with quotes on the internet is that you never know whether they are genuine or not" -
