Rang VM retentions today asking to disconnect due to better talk talk deal. My current deal was:

Line rental + free evening and weekend calls
    Free TV
    Broadband 2MB

Total monthly £23.95. This offer was also a result of me ringing retentions.

I wanted the talk talk-talk3 international + 8MB broadband which included unlimited any time calls to UK landlines. This deal from talk talk was £20.49.

The man on the phone was excellent, straight away i said i want to leave as i prefer the talk talk offer but i would prefer to stay with virgin. He checked my account and said i meet the criterea for the offer as i have been a nlt/VM customer for 8+ years.

    He offered me:

Phone line rental + unlimited uk calls
    Free TV
Broadband 2MB soon to be 4MB or may even be 5MB

this deal was for £19.95. Then i asked about my broadband, if he could upgrade that for the same price. He started to explain to me how VM's broadband speeds are the minimum speed you will get, whilst the Talk talk and any others using a phone line are the maximum speed which you are likely to get for only a few minutes at night.

He also told me that Virgin Media's broadband will be upgrading by the end of this year, and that the speeds will all change to 5MB, 10MB, and 20MB.

:j :j :j :j Oh and btw the last time i rang retentions and wanted to move to sky, the lady offered me a free wireless router up to £35 from their website:eek:

I have been paying £36.70 per month with Virgin Media (formally NTL) for the following services:

    Line Rental
Talk Evening & Weekend (free UK landline calls, eve & weekends only)
    Talk International (cheaper international calls)
    Caller Display
    4MB Broadband

I just called their Customer Service dept and said I was thinking of leaving Virgin Media as had seen a much better offer with Talk Talk (quoted the £16 offer mentioned in Martin's article) and I asked them if they had any special deals at the moment which might compete with the Talk Talk offer.

At first the guy gave me a a big spiel about how Talk Talk are rubbish and he said their broadband doesn't work properly and Watchdog had really slated them on TV recently, etc etc. I just ignored this and kept repeating that, despite all this, Talk Talk could offer me practically the same service I was getting now for £20 a month less!

At first, the guy offered to reduce my Service Charges to £34.20 per month (a measly saving of £2.50!) but I said I didn't think this was good enough and if they could not compete with the Talk Talk offer then I would just switch phone providers... he then very quickly said hold on, what about this offer...
£28.70 per month for the following:

    Line Rental
Talk Unlimited (free UK landline calls, anytime day or night)
Talk Mobile (25% cheaper mobile calls, anytime day or night)
    Talk International (cheaper international calls)
    Caller Display
    4MB Broadband

The only catch is that I have to agree to a new 12-month contract and would therefore be subject to a cancellation fee if I wanted to cancel within this period, but this appears to be pretty standard with these deals!

It's definately worth a quick phone call to Virgin Media as I just managed to save £8 per month but also gained free daytime UK landline calls and 25% cheaper mobile calls on top of the offers I had before!

Many thanks for another great 'Money Saving Tip' Martin :-)

I forgot to say that I don't even have a BT landline installed and therefore could not have switched to Talk Talk even if I had wanted to - I just didn't mention this to Virgin Media!!

Ah, the wonders of idle threats...!!

Virgin medium use broadband reduced from £18.99 to £10.00 when threatened to leave for talk talk.
    It works.
    Flat... Need to sell
  • I called Virgin today to see if I could save some money, as our bill was very uncompetitive.
£34.50 for TV package M, Broadband 2mb and phone line rental. All daily phone calls extra. (Previously Telewest)

Called first time the lady was very rude and said that broadband on talk talk was not as good and by the time you add line rental it would be £30 without tv. She advised I could remove the TV package and it would be £29.50 per month. Not good enough, as they were not giving me anything.

So I did a little more research and got the talk talk site on screen and called back the retention team. This time a got a very polite lady who advised that we had been with them a while and could do a better deal, as I was looking to move to talk talk. So after five minutes on the phone I came away with the following deal.

Broadband 2MB, TV package M, and UK anytime unlimited calls (size XL), with 25% reduced calls to mobiles for £19.95 per month on a 12 month contract.

I have ended up saving a minimum of £174.60 plus call charges to UK landlines.

Don't let them fobb you off, stay polite and you will get a better deal.

With Christmas just around the corner the spare cash will come in handy.

What a brilliant site this is!!!!!! Keep up the good work Martin.
