Sky+

We have Sky+ downstairs and my 2 older boys have ordinary Sky in their bedroom which we pay £9 odds per month for as part of our Sky package

We'd like to give them the Sky+ upstairs too but when I looked on Sky's website the only good offers of a cheap Sky+ box seems to be for new customers only.

I've seen Sky+ boxes on ebay for a good price and was wondering if we bought one would it work with their current viewing card or would we still have to get Sky involved to upgrade it all?

  • if the other boxes are on a multiroom subscription (usually about £10 per month each, i.e they recieve all the same channels as the main box) then you would just need to buy a box from wherever, call Sky and get them to pair their viewing cards to the new boxes and get them to add the Sky + subscription which should be free if your a subscriber.

It would probably be cheaper for you to get a Sky HD box and move your Sky + box to your lads bedroom, the Sky box has two LNB feeds so some wiring may be reuired to the bedroom.
There existing viewing card will work but needs pairing with the box, a call to Sky will achieve this if you are bent on a DIY installation.

Does Sky HD not cost more per month though ?

  • Your son's would also need an extra feed from the dish to the Sky+ box to use it fully.

You can use it with 1 feed, but you couldn't record 1 channel and watch another.

That's exactly what I needed to know. I hate ringing Sky unless I know a few basic so I sound like I know what i'm talking about.

    Thanks for all the replies

Yes it does but you could still use the HD box in your living room as a normal sky+ box but you'd get the added benefit of getting the free HD channels in HD (providing you have an HD tv).
Your best bet is to find a local sky man (with a sky pictured van) and ask him if he'd consider setting up the boxes for you and do any wiring, or if not could her recommend anyone to do it. It wouldnt cost you much that way, if you ring sky they'll charge you loads.
