As requested; why I like PP/VT..:D

Lostinrates - you say that you are thinking of getting one; I would suggest that you try one a few times first. I am not sure if the domestic-strength ones (via ebay or fitness outlets) will have the same power but I too thought of having my own (to add to the exercise bike, mini-trampoline and other various pieces of fitness equipment dotted around my house and garden...) but have instead gone to a "salon".

I say "salon" - these machines have been introduced to two tanning salons and I have now discovered that the gym I have joined has two hidden away in a corner (they had one on Saturday - when I went on Wednesday, another one had appeared; maybe they breed?).

This is in a smaller town a couple of miles away from where I live - and yet the bigger town six miles on the opposite direction has only one - hmmm. I am sure thay are popping up all over the place.

Although I consider myself to be an active outdoors person, my (upper) abdomen had gone to rack and ruin. Having been previously incredibly (wrongly) thin - for all the wrong reasons - not only had my muscles lost the ability to be "controlled", any extra flesh would make me "feel fat" (even though very far from obese). As is evident, I don't take a lot of notice of the numbers, so how I felt and my clothes fitting and more to the point - any previously unseen wobble or lack of tone would be horrifying to me (I am also quite shockingly vain). I do specific abdominal/core-targetted Pilates on most days and certainly they too have an effect - but the PP/VT has certainly increased that effect.

It is very easy to see them as a short -cut as all the publicity material boasts that 10 minutes on one is equal to an hour's workout. Well, even I'm sceptical about that but they do have a wonderful feel-good effect (afterwards; during - and feeling the intense wobbling - not so much) so must trigger those old endorphins. For me, they have also triggered a return to the wish to undertake more exercise more regularly and there is NO DOUBT AT ALL that after only four 10 minute sessions, my abdomen is already more toned with signs of definition. It can only be the PP - as, apart from the Pilates - nothing else that I do would have such an effect (so quickly).

For larger people, I believe they would have an equally positive effect even if they don't want to do any other exercise at that point - that may come later when some toning has been achieved. For me, exercise does mean more effort and getting hot and bothered. With the Powerplate and only having to take off your shoes, 10 minutes and it's all over, I can't shrug off the feeling of cheating so I have to build it into a more holistic approach.

I do believe though that it is doing loads of good, probably no harm whatsoever (if the Russians usethem to train their astronauts, lots of research must have been done) so long as the safety guidelines are followed and have certainly improved my shape in a very short time - so an overall positive effect.

Sorry to OP of the thread to derail it altogether - just wanted to answer the questions;happy to start a new one about Powerplates if that's better.

    x

I should also say that i usually eat a very very healthy diet - almost vegetarian, lowish carb, low fat and loads of salad, fruit and veggies with vanilla slices my weakness - so I do not see the PP as a way to get away with eating garbage; I know what happens when I do - I seem to gain a spare tyre (!!) in the course of a day. Again, I think there are huge benefits to the PP but the food we eat will always play a part.

    .....

thank you very much, thats all very interesting. Hmm, I've found I can hire them for the home but no found a local place (apart from the posh gym/spa combos) locally that has one. This sounds as if it might be worth me trying though. I have very low stamina and strength and so my exercise bursts are short.

Thank you for the PoV. I think I'll do another ring around next week: see if since last time I tried anyone has got one. It certainly wouldn't be my only exercise, I am doing more and more at home and I walk twice/three times a day but really I need to find another doable cardio thing too.

    Not nice ab.

I think her user name is a reflection of her frame of mind rather than actions (having read other posts on another part of this forum). I know you like to be outspoken and controversial but - unless I am missing your point altogether - your remark doesn't have one iota of humor in it.

This is from the kettle to the pot.

(I hope yesterday was OK by the way...)
I didnt mean it nastily hence the smiley. I thought she had messed up the calculation TBH

OK this one will shock you (or make you feel better) - mine is 43.12 at the moment I believe... was 46.23 at one point (I check it on the Wii Fit every few days - the games and exercises on it went out of the window long ago but I still use it just for the weight graph). Yes, I fully accept I'm obese, I swim 6 times a week, go to the gym pretty much every day (think there's one day that can go out of the window at times) and I've dropped half a stone since the start of this year. Even when I was normal sized (teaching wrecked my mental health which led to the weight gain) I always had the sort of frame that meant I weighed heavier than I looked - I've had people laugh in disbelief when I've told them I'm 18stone13 (like I say - I was nearer 20 stone when I started on all this).

I'm probably fitter than a lot of skinny people though, the doctor keeps desperately trying to find an obesity related illness to pin on me and can't find anything (which bemuses me no end) - I never actually got hung up on the numbers till it affected my fertility.

And no, sadly my calculation isn't messed up... the doctor's done the numbers as well and I work out about the same as what the WiiFit tells me.

I find that hideously offensive dippychick.

I got fat over a long period of time because of depression, stress, comfort eating and not wanting to go out of the house apart from for the basics of survival (work etc) because my job was destroying me. I also self-harmed, and probably overate as another form of self-harm and to get back at my incredibly difficult mother (her major source of disappointment was the fact that her daughter was overweight - and as it was the one part of my life she was unable to control - I controlled it in a way to mark out my independence).

I was a reclusive wreck, and when I did venture out for non-essential stuff - I'd get kids thinking it was ok to shout abuse out of car windows etc... why on earth would I want to go out into a world like that?

If you actually read the post - you'd see how much I've got my weight down by over the last year and might have filled in the blanks that I decided to make a change for various reasons - but no, you just decided to post an incredibly insulting image and have a bash.

Yes I've reported the post... I'm actually speechless that someone can respond in such an unpleasant manner when I'm being honest about my weight and failings.

Very unpleasant and I'm really shocked someone on here would be so uneccesarily catty.

I'm with you on that dizziblonde.

Dippychick - it's pathetic, offensive, unkind and wrong in I don't know how many different ways.

Do you seriously think it's funny?

Your absence from any of the more controversial discussion has not gone unnoticed - I wish it would stay that way.

I have been guilty of the odd wind-up myself but never, ever, EVER would I believe that one woman could be so utterly rotten to another (as you have directly quited dizziblonde).

I too have reported your post as Abuse.

I don't like liars. Sorry, but if you are excersising every single day and eating healthily you would not be severely obese with a missing medical reason  FACT

Lie to yourselves by all means, but don't try and lie to other people.
