Morning all,
I'm preparing for the return of my family later today. I've made 2 dozen apple muffins using up some of the abundance of Discoveries that I bought on Monday. Got carried away with the first English apples of the season, they smell so appley
I've also made a big batch of oat biscuits;)
We shall be having gammon steaks with fried potatoes and peas, beans and carrots (I suspect that the kids have not eaten any veg since they left last Tuesday;)). I'm going to make parsley sauce too -I'm the only one who likes it so I shall be freezing the extra in me sized portions.
Chocolate fudge pudding for pud to remind them how good home cooking is:)
My sil does most of the cooking when they are camping (with a bit of help from the kids -I don't think her brother helps:rolleyes:) and she takes the very sensible view that nutrition is not something to worry about while camping. She says 'we can eat broccoli when we get home'. Amongst some nice meals of chicken curry, prawns on the fire, pork kebabs and couscous they have also been eating pot noodles:eek: (for a laugh apparently) DS2 was completely floored when asked if he liked it. He knew the politically/mum-pleasing correct response was 'no, it is processed crap', but he secretly liked it so he said 'yes..no...a bit..not really..sort of'.
They also have something my sil calls camp trifle which involves digestives and squirty cream, in fact I think it involves all 5 kids lining up for squirty cream to be applied directly into the mouth. Squirty cream is something I have never bought, don't think I've even picked a can up. DS1 really appreciates my real food approach so he'll be glad to be home, the other 2 are happy to eat any old rubbish:rolleyes:
I'm looking forward to their return:j0 -
Morning All
Had a productive morning so far sending out CVs for potential work.
Been raining here this morning, so it might be too wet to get to the plum tree. I'm waiting for the workman to contact me about doing my bathroom. I won't be holding my breath though.
Breakfast was a slim fast, lunch will be a wrap with humus and ham and dinner salmon en croute.
Hope everyone's okComping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
Morning all,
Elona :bdaycake: Hope it's a happy one & to Ms N9eav.
I woke up very early this morning. DGS called out at 5am to ask had Poppa gone to work yet. He's still getting use to the new shift he's on. It's a novelty that he's here when he wakes up. So I couldn't get back to sleep. We trekked off to the island Mass & morning tea. He ate sooooo muchand then said in a loud voice that Father had eaten the last sandwich.
After lunch we went to the other island as DH wanted me to go a script at the chemist. Went to the library and then DGS played at the park which is right on the beach. Another little boy was there so they played happily for 1 1/2 hours while I read underneath a tree keeping an eye on them playing. I had to intervene twice.
I bought this skeleton toy for DGS at the chemist which upon soaking it in the shower/bath it was suppose to get bigger. Didn't happen. DGS wants us to go back tomorrow to tell the lady because she said it would. Nope, that's not going to happen either. It's soaking in a dish on the coffee table tonight.
Haribo I dribbled on a bit longer just for you. Trust me, most times I post I delete 3/4 of it after I've read it. I won't tonight. Don't complain it's rubbish.
Moiliere I have the report abuse or something like that right next to the thanks button. I can see me accidently pressing it instead of thanks button.
Enjoy your day. <hugs> to those not well. ByeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeDon't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -

Thriftlady, your DSIL sounds like great fun! Hope your kids have enjoyed their holiday, I thinks she's right, too FWIW, camping and hols in general are a time to relax, and if that means eating Pot Noodle (eeurgh) for an adventure, whatever floats your boat, I suppose! (although that trifle sounds tempting, and what fun could you get up to with it?)

I'm trying not to watch the econonic gastronomy program on iplayer, but I might crack later as my boss is away and I feel like shutting myself in the office and not working this afternoon

I was interviewed about taking in lodgers, it seems Dot Cotton is taking in a lodger so they wanted to interview someone old to get their views, lol. June Brown who plays Dot Cotton is in her 80's at 57 I was probably the nearest they could get!!
Bet she's not going to get a Katy though! :rotfl::staradmin:starmod: beware of geeks bearing .gifs...:starmod::staradmin:starmod: Whoever said "nothing is impossible" obviously never tried to nail jelly to a tree :starmod:0 -
Thanks for the tip Lemon. My mum has a bay tree in a pot by her front door so I can snaffle some from there.
Does it flavour the flour though?
I have asked H to print off the receipe for bakewell in a bag from econ gastron last night. It looked lovely......mouth is watering at the thought of it!
OK so has autumn arrived already? My oak tree is shedding leaves all over the lawn. We've had heavy rain a lot since July but leaves haven't shed like this is starting to. I hate the mess they make and although we've got a leaf vac its so heavy I can't use it.
Burp - I've not read your previous posts but sorry to hear your nan isn't well. hug to you and the family.I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knifeLouise Brooks

Bitsy if you only add one leaf you'll be fine, it will give a very, very faint aroma but by the time you've baked with the flour it will have gone. You can make some yummy puddings with bay leaves, I have Sophie Grigson's cookbook 'Herbs' and there is a lovely bay-scented baked custard with apricot jam and clotted cream recipe in it, not very diet friendly though but tastes wonderful, can PM the recipe if anybody is interested.
I also came across a recipe for making Plum & Bay Jam on waitrose's website http://www.waitrose.com/recipe/Plum_and_Bay_Jam.aspx which I haven't tried yet, I have plenty of bay but no ruddy plums lol!
Tip for people using bay leaf in casseroles it goes very bitter on freezing and imparts a bitter flavour to your dish. So remove the bay leaf before you freeze, you can always add a fresh one if you like when you've defrosted it.
