Hi there! This is the Daily Thread for Thur 13 Aug! It is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
Please do not start a new Daily Thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Dailys' live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good.

Morning.
Today is my Daughters' 14th birthday. She was born in Bouake, Ivory Coast when we worked there back a long. The kind of hospital that makes you grateful for the NHS! The doctor was fine and the staff really, but it was quite an experience. I had to drive the nurse to a pharmacy as the one in the hospital was closed on a Sunday and they had no pain killers available. Supper was liver and peas, and the roof leaked when it rained....

I am going to try and sculture a turtle cake later. Whether is was a random choice or what I don't know....?

Wet and horrible here again, pretty poor summer so far.

Well, have a good one

    Morning N9eav and all who cross/follow :)

Grey and dismal day here, drove in again this morning - road was a bit slippy and a bit more traffic - it's amazing what a difference 15 mins can make - but got in okay - now the fear has subsided! Will be working lateish again tonight as I have so much to get done here.

OH had done the hoovering when I got in we have chillis on the chilli plants on the windowsill. He went mushroom hunting on his way to work and found some edibles which are drying in the kitchen. It's great mushroom weather, so we are going cep hunting at the weekend. I can see some mushrooms from my window :)

I bought some buttons in the charity shop. I weighed them when I got in and there is just shy of five kilos of them! I want to cover a canvas with them for the wall, but it will take ages. There are four different designs, but most of them are pink :)

I loaded the washing machine and the bread maker before I left, but didn't start them as I didn't want to disturb OH any more.

Have a good day all, cel x

    Morning all!

First day off work in months but it's not a fun one. dd(12) is seeing the ENT consultant today to see whether she's going to have a hearing aid or more surgery. TBH I hope it's the aids - if she has more surgery it's good for about 6 months and then it takes another 18 months to get to see the consultant. If she then gets aids on that occasion she will be bang in the middle of GCSEs. Also at the moment her condition is classed as temporary even though she's had it since she was 3yo so it's hard to get any equipment or extra money apparantly. The surgeries are causing her permanent damage too. Mr Caring Sharing is coming too. not looking forward to that. He doesn't handle people telling him that his Princess is not Perfect in every way and will make a scene.

Celyn - good job you're a scientist - I would not trust myself to distinguish between edible and non edible mushrooms.

Happy birthday to Miss N9aev - hope it's a good one

    have good days all

Good morning and a very happy birthday to Miss N9eav :j- what a start in life she had, didn't she?

Celyn - you'll soon get used to it all and the fear will subside then disappear completely. In March, I had to drive my own car over here to France and made it in one piece (only getting lost once!), and now, apart from one time when I forgot to drive on the other side of the road, I've been fine. Mind you, there's no congestion here at all - the longest I've ever had to wait in a traffic 'jam' was three minutes!

Well, I've just heard the UK forecast, N9eav, and it's supposed to be clearing up later on today. I hope it does for everyone.

Today, I'm trying the Navarin of Lamb that was on last week's Economy Gastronomy, and tomorrow I shall have a go at the Quick-Spiced Chicken and Biryani. Like a true OS'er, I've checked and already have all the ingredients for both meals. Pudding today will be the bread-and-butter pud that's in the oven right now; it's a big one so will be pudding again tomorrow. It's delicious hot with cold creme fraiche.

I need to go to the shops today to pick up a few bits for taking back to the UK. Still waiting for the call about the baby (due the day after tomorrow!) before we can actually leave.

I have a huge pile of ironing to do but will do that tomorrow; I will have added to the pile by then! WM is on with the second load, so lots to get dry.

I hope everyone is keeping well and that you all have a great day.

    morning all...

i'm at work bright and breezy, as my brother crashed at mine last night, and offered to drop me off here on his way back to his work... (hmmmmm i have to admit i could have done with an extra hour in bed...)

i have packed a nice munch today, as i went to the cpompany shop last night... (sells loads of barginous M&S and waitrose stuff REALLY cheap. smoothies 19p etc...) it's got loads of things in that i wouldn't normally buy, but i went a bit mad last night, and still only managed to spend £36...

hope everyone has a good day, :):):):):)

    Morning everyone.
Sort of sunny here so will see how the day goes. Got lots of errands to run this morning, plus loads of house work etc.
Must must must put the BM on and make some hobnobs.
Watched Econ Gastron last night - £330 A WEEK!!! I thought I was going to have a heart attack at that sort of money. Next weeks look even worse, especially with their food wastage. That chickin biryani (sp?) looked really nice - do they have the receipe on the website or can you mioliere post the receipe for me? :D
What I don't understand about that show is they make a big deal about using what you've got in the house for the meal at the end. And then go out and spend another £10 on extras. Surely the whole point was to show that you can whip up another meal WITHOUT spending even more money? Or am I the only one confused?
Anyway going to put BM on and hang up some washing. I do really want to hang it on the line but will it rain whilst I am out?!!

Hugs to those that need it.
Have a good day OS or not.

:bdaycake::bdaycake:Happy Birthday to Elona, have a great day, and Happy Birthday to Miss n9eav xx

Off to work today with dd, today is her last day, and she get paid :T she has worked very well, and had achieved every task set for her, I am very proud of her.

Stef, good luck for you all today, I hope you get the best outcome for you all xxx

We have the ham hock last night, which was delish, we will have the rest tonight with chips and peas.

Need to do a wash tonight, but as its raining again  will put it on the airer, will have a quick tidy round before work.

I have another load of runner beans ready to pick and blanch and freeze, might try and get round to that tonight, although all my time seems to be taken up with house hunting at the moment

DD just got up, she is not enjoying these early starts for work :p.

Kathy, if you get chance let us know if the baby is on its way, good luck !!

    Have good days all xx

    Morning All

Off across the Pennines today to have an iPod connection fitted to the car, was promised when we bought it, but Peugeot only just released it for our car. Was part of car deal so not costing;)

Hopefully the weather will be OK and we will come the scenic way home and not the M62. May even pack a picnic :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

M - Saturday is a very good day to be born , but don't plan an BBQ's as it always rains on that day:confused:. We keep saying how it used to be nice, but talking to my neighbour yestereday who were celebrating their 43rd WA and saying they came home from honeymoon in a caravan early as the weather was awful and had to go out and buy jumpers!

Bitsy - Think the whole program is so the chef's can show off their talents  rather than real economy. What sort of real life working folk are they who have £330 a week to spend on food! Another case of going from chicken and rice to highly spicy food and the kids reaction was not impressed. They must be starting very late not to have food ready for 9, have they not heard of night before preparation. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:. My basic store cupboard is sorely lacking as we don't have onions or garlic in other than in power form. We don't like them, they upset us (keep trying but no joy), and I can add plenty of flavour with herbs, etc.

Did a chicken yesterday so will be making stock in the SC today and having chicken for dinner again - which variant still to be decided.

DS asking for voluntary seperation at work today = 3 months tax free pay, and will set him up if he gets it. Fingers crossed please.
