What an odd question - it's like saying "Why should i buy a BMW rather than another car?"

Only if a BMW does things another car doesn't, if you're not a BMW owner then you won't know. I was always told no such thing as a 'stupid' (or odd) question, only stupid answers (and there seem to have been plenty of them).......

Having discussed it with the lads at work, it seems there's nothing an iPod can do that my Sony Ericsson K800i can't do, so I'll stick with that.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

You've obviously never used an iPod Touch.

But that's OK, I don't think any less of you.

listen to an ipod and sony x series side by side and the ipod just offends your ears in comparison
I agree with you about the sound quality, although I wouldn't go as far as saying they offend :). The iPod classic and iPhone 3GS are the best in terms of sound quality for Apple (Spoken like someone who's read reviews :)). The noise floor of the aforementioned is far superior to the others (-spoken like an audiophile). For the majority of people with consumer headphones, the X Series and the various iPods will be comparable. It's the extra bells and whistles that blows the competition away.

A note about sound. A lot of people confuse "flatness" with quality. A pair of earphones may deliver more bass (for example) and that may be more appealing for the listener. This does not make it better quality. A device that sounds flat and which may be less appealing to the listener does not signify poor quality. In the case of the Sony, the sound quality is without any doubt better than an iPod. Anyone who buys an iPod should without a doubt buy some better headphones though!

If it does what you want, stick with it. Can I suggest you go try an iPod Touch (if that's what you're after) or go to an O2 shop to try an iPhone (it's the touch with phone functions really) and form your own opinion. In my opinion, the iPhone 3GS is without a doubt the best palmheld device to date.

An age ago, I bought a Zen Stone, even though I had an iPod. The iPod just didn't work for me when going for a run, not matter how I strapped it. If I had money to burn, I would probably go for the new iPod Shuffle. The only reasons to go for the Shuffle are it's extra small size (sometimes small is too small imo) and it's VoiceOver ability. Given the choice, I have stuck with my pebble. Despite owning a 3GS, I still run with the pebble. If it works, it works. If you decide to stick with your K800i cause it does what you want it to, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

(But I still suggest you try out the iPod Touch or iPhone to see for yourself :))

    That's Lithium batteries for you.

Ask HTC, Sony, LG, Sony again, IBM, HP, LG again, Nokia, Gateway, Hitachi, Fujitsu and Dell, and I'm sure they'll be more than happy to tell you.

The only difference between Apple and the above companies is that Apple have shipped 218,000,000 mp3 players with Lithium batteries.

I have a Nokia 6300 phone. I justed put a 2 GB micro SD card and it can do everything an iPod Nano can do and much more.

iPod nano costs £100+. The SD card cost £4. Net effect £96 saved (I had the phone anyway).

For most expensive items, there are cheaper and better alternatives. The companies try to create a desirability of their products via ads and marketing.

People don't really need iPod they just want it.

    :)
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Has Leopards account been hacked? He's not sticking up for some Apple creation!

I bought my wife an ipod touch 8gb for xmas, and she loves it. She uses it alot for music, youtube and facebook etc and thinks it looks great (can't argue with that). Sure, there are far better devices out there that do more for less, but it does what she wants and she's pleased with it.

I have a Sansa E280 my son has an ipod touch. Sound quality of the sansa blows the ipod away. But his is prettier and has a load of 'apps' that he never uses.

So if you want a 'lifestyle experience' and be the envy of your mates then buy the ipod touch, if you want to listen to music buy something else...

What mp3 player does more than the iPod Touch for less?
Sound quality of the sansa blows the ipod away.

I deal with $10,000 pre-amps that sound a little bit better than $50 ones.

I'm impressed than mp3 manufacturers have outpaced the pro-audio industry when it comes to sound quality.
