Virgin 9months 0% NO FEE

  • Hi All

    Just a quick one

We have a card with Virgin and we have about 800 quid on a balance transfer that attracts interest in July 2010, but also about 400 on new purchases that will attract interest from Sept 22nd.

We rang to see if we could keep interest free for longer rather than balance transfering the whole amount to another card to be told that they can't do that, but Virgin had been "very good to us" so we should consider staying with them

When we pushed them we were offered to put £400 into an account of our choice to pay them back the £400 which will soon attreact interest and then pay back the £400 interest free over the next 5 months.

When I tried to say that we would need to think this through as what would happen - for example - if we needed to buy something else on a card but we didnt want to pay interest, he got quite pushy, telling us time was against us and that we really needed to take this offer to avoid interest.

This was on the 08000150306 number

Any thoughts? Would the loyalty team have a better offer and be less pushy - or should I just BT to a new company?

    Thanks

Apparently the offer did not include money transfers at 0%, just balance transfers.
"Apparently"? Did you not read the T&Cs before applying?

Lesson learned hopefully. Next time you could lose money...4% of £10,000 is £400 !!!!

Just out of interest, does the 0% deal end on the 9 month anniversary of the account setup, or does it end on the due date of the 9th bill? I'm unsure as to when I should pay off the balance in full to avoid the interest charge.
In my experience with Virgin (over the last 4.5 years) it'll be the date the 9th statement is produced*. However, times change and so this is one of the questions you should ask during the activation call. See this handy activation call checklist...

    * Put yourself in the best possible position by delaying the date your first statement is produced, ie if calling to activate the card on the 11th, then ask for a 10th of the month statement date.

Sorry, but if you wanted to make purchases without attracting interest you should have applied for 0% on purchases card instead/as well!!!

Do you seriously think that the companies without making nearly any money on you will dance as you sing?

I am very surprised they went as far as they went, as there is a reason they offer cards with different offer on BT and on purchases - TO CONFUSE US AND MAKE SOME MONEY!!

You know, that bit they are here for? To make money?

Take the offer and run - and apply for different card if you want to enjoy 0% on purchases.

By the way you are not doing them favour by staying with them on 0% BT till July... They lent money to you, they got their 3% transfer fee already and if you leave early it's a bonus for them.

I never thought of doing that :o. Then again, this is my first stooze, and hopefully the first of many to come. Cheers for the tip though, I will definitely remember that one. It's a pity I can't change my date now, my statement was generated this morning .

I've changed the statement date on one of my Virgin cards during a promotional period. It wasn't the introductory offer but a repeat 0% offer, but they should still do it for you on the introductory offer. Just tell them you want a payment due date that better fits with when you're paid. ;)

Be sure to ring them afterwards though (maybe a couple or three months in) to check the system has updated your 0% end date to suit the new statement date requested. Please post back with the outcome, since others may benefit.

Will do. It'd be smashing if I could wangle another month's worth of stoozing interest from this card :)

I changed the bill date to the day before it is usually produced, and was told that my next bill will be created on the day before it would have normally been produced anyway. Have I hashed this up??? :(

    Hi,
I just received a letter from Virgin.

"We've some good news - at the moment, your Virgin Credit Card rate for card purchases is only 0% p.a. until your March 2010 statement date. This rate will only be applied if you make a card purchase before your November 2009 statement date."

Was this part of the deal - if so, can I make a small purchase?

    Cheers
