  • Well done MSErs - what a fantastic bunch of people you all are:beer:.

The support and help on this thread have been brillant and quite humbling - good to see decent people still exist:T.

I can't add any more to what the others have said (I'm not that good at shopping on a budget - hence my debts:o) but if you really are stuck and I know you said you don't want to accept food from others but I would be more happy to send something should you need it.

If you buy a cheap value tin of soup boil up a couple of potatoes and chop into chunks and add to soup, makes it much more filling! For a cheap meal i boil value noodles and smartprice mixed veg in veg stock granules - its actually really tasty! You could do it with rice too and I also sometimes have just a bowl of pasta (any sort) and just boil in stock cube. I agree with the porridge, v cheap and filling.

Also a cheap meal i do is cook up value tinned toms add chopped onion and stock granules (herbs too if available), then mix in with pasta, if you do have some add a bit of grated cheese. It tastes lovely!

  • Where are people getting tins of beans from for under 10p??

Asda have rolled back their porridge oats to 25p a bag...even cheaper than the smart price range. They also do cheap noodles for 9p and curry sauce for 2p a jar.

This thread is just lovely :-). I have been in this position myself very recently when I lost my job, and benefits took 5 weeks to come through - if I hadn't had my lovely mummy close by to help me out, I don't know what I would have done! Thankfully i got a new job the week I got the benefits through so can support myself again.

I'm actually thinking about using some of these ideas to see how long I can go without a shop though - I have loads of 'store cupboard' stuff which I'm not really using like lentils and things.

Btw, I totally agree with buying porridge if you like it - I lived off this during some leaner student periods!

There is a Food Bank in Cardiff, run by the Trussell Trust. Maybe you could see if you can get a food parcel from them?

I havent got much either, in similar position, but if you PM me I will also send you a few bits ,nothing very exciting though, we all have to look after each other.

A good friend helped me out when things were tight, and I would like to take this opportunity to pass on the kindness they showed me to someone else.
  • What a great thread, some brilliant ideas here and some very lovely people.

OP - I wish you all the best and totally understand if you're not comfortable accepting gifts. If by any chance you change your mind though I'd be happy to gift you some shampoo and/or shower gel. I have tonnes of the little bottles you get in hotel rooms and I think my husband would be glad to see them gone from our bathroom :rotfl:
