Apparently I backed into someone in car park...

...I was aware i was close but didn't think I touched him.

As I drove off he was beeping the horn and shouting. I drove off because I wasn't aware I had touched him, AND because he was shouting and I was scared and had my 2yo in car at time.

At the time I was reversing out of a space. Because he was stopped at the time and I had to swing round and back up some more to get car out of the exit to the car park I didnt think he would at that point move into the space. I was going extremely slowly but would still be surprised if I touched him at all.

Of course he must have taken number plate and spoken to nursery staff (it was my son's nursery). Now says dent on bonnet. No marks at all on mine.

They have video they haven't shown me but say it looks like we touched. - But I am not sure this is necessarily true - obviously it might look like that.

Nursery staff want to give him my contact details. I am thinking I will refuse to let them and will say he can contact the police if he wants.

In my opinion there was nothing to it. He has seen a dent in his bonnet he wants to blame on me and wants me to say I will give cash for it instead of going through insurance.

Can I ask nursery to not give my details?

  • oh lord yes, under no circumstances can nursery give out your home address without your prior agreement. its against the data protection act, their own ofsted agreement and impairs their CRB checks. how do they know he's not using the alledged bump for some other reason?

all that aside, if they have evidence, let them send you a copy. if they want to go to the police, let them. if you have done nothing wrong then no problems and to be honest, even if you have bumped him and were unaware at the time, then whats the problem? let them go through the insurance and stop using bully boy tactics.

My OH likes me to sometimes reverse my car right upto his bumper and even with him calling me back if I touch his car I feel it but it doesn't leave a mark.

I have had a car reverse into me and even though there was no damage he knew he'd hit me and I felt it as the car rocks a bit. This rock would be visible on CCTV.

You can request that the nursery does not pass on your detail and he can go to his insurers and police. Were you on private land? Have you seen the CCTV? I am assuming the nursery staff have viewed the footage and are of the opinion you did hit the car to get involved.

if you had hit me and drove of you would have had the same reaction from me.

Have you considered that the person is likely to be waiting for you at nursery the next time you go? I would try to resolve the problem amicably, rather than cause a scene outside the nursery.

It does not matter whether or not the nursery give out your details, if he reports it to his Insurers they can find out who your Insured with by simply inputing your reg number into their computer and then they will just claim off your policy anyway. If he reports it to the police you might have problems with them and as the other poster has mentioned he can simply wait outside the nursery.
  • Surey if you backed into his front end, you would have dented the bumper and not the bonnet? I have *accidently* waved someone back into a car, and all it did was partially crack the front number plate plastic. We couldn't even warrant buying a new number plate the damage was so minimal. I reckon matey-boy is trying to pull a fast one to get some quick cash. Let him go through the insurers and see if he persists with the claim then.

If the OP was driving a 4x4 with a rear mounted spare then the damage would occur to the bonnet.

There was one story of a street in London where every car had a dent in their bonnet and only one person in the whole street owned a 4x4. The residents were getting pretty fed up with this lady bumping their bonnets and someone took action and stole her car.

Same here, and I would be down at the nursery getting it sorted very quickly if I wasn't given the required information.

I'm sorry I have to agree with the others I would be extremely annoyed if I thought you had driven into my car and then gone merrily on your way.

I appreciate that sometimes as a female, it is better for us not to stop, however in this situation, I think you should have done. It was presumably daylight and there were others around as well as CCTV. I think that you should have stopped to inspect any damage yourself, and take a pic with your mobile, that way if he does claim you could have been sure of the damage.
