Or Capital 1 and pay the balance off at the end of the month so you don't pay any interest.

Didn't Tesco used to to a pre paid credit card for shopping with them? Do they still do this?

    Does this help mate: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=23606591

Only for people in Northern Ireland I'm afraid. Is there a Yorkshire Bank near you? Their basic account comes with a Maestro card.
  • Capital one turned me down, they send me a letter saying i was excepted and would get a card then withdrew it again? dont know why. Again pre pay is no good when i rarely get out and when i get paid i have to transfer and it takes days. Then it may not be enough on card and i dont get my shopping etc. Been there and been through all that hassel before. I have a gold card pre paid card. I dont use it anymore.

The CO-OP cashminder does faster payments for under £100 so you can transfer the money onto any card and then shop on line. This is now what I am doing until I can get into the bank to close the account. I transfer onto my LloydsTsb debit card and then go to Tesco on line and shop with it. All done in 5 mins.

Natwest do a step account, not sure if its a debit card or the equivilent to electron, Halifax also do some kind of card and I do know tht Yorkshire bank do a debt card which I think you can use on line with Tesco but alas I don't know if they are in N.I., sorry.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

  • If your dad is willing to let you use his bank card, would he be willing to get you a credit card on his account as a 2nd cardholder so you can do your food shopping online? or even open up a capital 1 account wtih a low credit limit again with you as a 2nd cardholder. that would make things much easier for you. obviously the only downside with this option is that if you dont pay your dads credit rating gets affected.

    good luck

    A Clubcard Plus?

You could always book a cheap Ryanair flight with your Co-op 4508 card over to Scotland, pop into a branch of Clydesdale, and open a basic account.

Otherwise, you'll need to try a local NI bank.

I had a similar situation where my Lloyds American Express, which I usually use for online purchases, with no problem, however when Itried to use the card in a shop, it wouldn't work. Went into Lloyds to check if there was a problem - nope credit limit was fine. Tried again in another shop again refused, rang them up was told my account was correct, working and no reported faults. So I tried in another shop again refused so went into branch. Member of staff tried the card in their machine - again would not work, infact it wouldn't register as a card being put in the machine. They guessed that it could be a problem with the chip. So an order for a replacement card was made was told it would be about 5 working days so I was surprised when it arrived first thing next morning.

So it could be the actual chip on your card is faulty.

Perhaps the shop didn't accept American Express? AMEX cards attract a higher charge in processing for retailers and not all of them are willing to accept this. AMEX also have stricter guidelines on the system/procedures retailers have for accepting AMEX.

To the OP, as has been said not all Visa Debit cards are debit cards. Some are just electron cards guised as Visa debit.

The best option for you is to find a bank in your area that can provide you with a card Tesco accepts, goto the branch and open an account with no overdraft facility. Requires minimal checks and only ID to open normally.
  • The Natwest step account is like a basic bank account and you get a solo debit card with it, which Tesco do take.

try for a Lloyds tsb current account account !! even if you don't manage to qualify for for the full current account , you do get a full visa debit card with their basic current account as well, which you can use in tesco with no problem!! time to change banks i suppose !!
