Do you/would you tell dog owners to pick 'it' up?

I have 2 greyhounds (have had 1 for 1 year and the other for 4 months); since I've had them, I've accepted that cleaning their mess is part of the responsibility of owning dogs. I just get so frustrated about the amount of people who stand and watch their dogs going to the toilet and then walking off and leaving it. I'm only 5'2" and female, so I'm reluctant to say anything to the owners (mostly men, occasionally women).
I also regularly have people throwing me dirty looks while my dogs are in the act of going to the toilet - a couple have even shouted at me to pick it up - when I'm standing with a bag in my hand waiting for them to finish!
So back to the original question - do you/would you say anything? And if so, what and how?

some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it

Yes i'd say something, size is irrelevant! I'd probably just say excuse me, do you need a bag to clear the Dog's mess up? I have some spare!
Never had anyone say anything to me when i'm waiting to clear up after Chaya, if anyone yelled at me to pick it up i'd probably say 'Is there any reason you think i'm not planning to?!' cause i'm always there with my bag in hand waiting0 -
I would if i thought i wasn't going to get the poo kicked at me or something equally nasty.
I once had a lady shout at me cos one of the dogs did a wee in the street on the grass verge.... she was going to call the council. I told her to do it while I waited so I could have a good laugh! What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
Yeah I do it all the time the majority of people i've seen letting their dogs turd and attempt to walk away is unbelievable if i'm driving i shout it out the window! lol, I clean up my dogs mess so why shouldn't everyone else. They wouldn't want their kids/grand kids falling in it.

Whereas I completely agree with you all, I think that there are bigger issues. I'd rather dodge ten dog dumps than one cigarette end.0

Have politely asked a regular offender to pick up as our children were stepping in it when they walked along the street . Got a lot of verbal abuse on a regular basis as a result
. Would I do it again - yes.
And people who let their dogs foul outside schools and don't pick up need shooting because they are selfish scumbags.
I am a dog owner who never leaves the house with my dog without a bag to pick up.0 -
I don't know, some people round here wouldn't think twice of starting a fight with you so i'd have to be careful. It is very annoying though and really disgusting. Think happy & you'll be happy
I :heart2: my doggies

*L* when I had two greyhounds I used to take a small hand shovel out with me and plenty of carrier bags ... people would stand there and tut at me while the dogs were "going" then end up laughing when I got my shovel out and my bags! I used to say, "big dogs, big mess ... you didn't think I would leave it there, did you?!"
Basically, if someone lets their dog "go" outside my gate then I will go tell them to pick it up. If they don't I would bag it and follow them ... when I found out where they lived I'd sling it over their garden gate.
I now have a very small dog, but it doesn't matter how big or small ... it is YOUR dog's mess, so clean it up!!!!
Obviously, you stand more of a chance getting them to clean it up if it is just outside your gate ... I don't think I would go up to someone in any street and tell them ... but it's my right not to walk out of my gate and tread in something. I keep my garden tidy and the pavement outside my gate so I'm not standing for anyone letting their dog mess it up!!0 -
I'm a bit wary as some not very nice people about and i often walk the dogs on my own, but would probably go down the Tigerlily helpful route by offering a bag. It really annoys me the people that let there dogs offlead and pretend not to see and there's no excuse for leaving poo on paths. I don't understand whats so difficult about poop scooping

The local woods are a popular dog walking area and as there is no poo bin i really doubt many people pick up. Theres often some poo's the path or right next to it to avoid so i doubt the dog was off wandering and while people say doesn't matter its degradable, how long does it actually take? It absoluty reeked when it was warm last weekend, not pleasent.0 -

:rotfl:I've often said I should carry a shovel and a bucket instead of little plastic bags!
I do retaliate when people shout at me to pick it up - and point out the bag in my hand.
I think it's all the more annoying when these dog owners are in the local park, full of children and with bins every 20-foot or so.some people grin and bear it, others smile and do it

Ha ha ha ... never thought about a bucket before ... !!! One tip .. always check your carrier bag hasn't any holes in it before you use it ... the times I got caught out with that!!!
These days I use a small sandwich bag .. and hurray .. no shovel needed!! There's a lot to be said for small yappy dogs!0
