I will ring my Sister tommorow and get her to check the battery on her machine (Bought from Comet 3 weeks ago).

Your sister's machine may be OK. On some of these websites, the battery spec differs even depending on the colour of the machine, which is why it's important to check the detailed specs on *exactly* the item you are thinking of buying. I guess it depends on what stock levels they are trying to shift.

Maybe not, but if my warning stops someone buying one of these deviously-advertised machines by mistake, then I'm happy.

I still don't get the devious advertising. Clear advertising, 4 hour battery life... If they hid that, and didn't tell you at all, then yes, a "warning beware devious at work" would be fine, but because they haven't, and they've gone for a standard bundle not a premium bundle, then more fool the person who buys it for long battery life...

saying this, your warning won't make that much difference, as many people use these machines around the home, and they are so bleeding small, using it for 8 hours would be an impossibility without getting some form of RSI

You are just plain wrong on this one.

Most people would have seen reviews of a standard machine and assume that they were buying a standard machine not one with a poorer spec produced for these retailers so they can apparently price match online retailers selling the standard spec.

As you say it isn't illegal but it is most certainly devious. I reckon you'd support them if they were selling a model with an 8086 chip and 16K memory just so you could be Mr Smarty Pants and say read the specs.

I believe the ones in Argos are the three cell ones too

Their website says "up to 7 hrs battery life" - doesnt sound like the 3 cell version to me?

EDIT: Just noticed - the white version has a 7hr battery, the black one a 4hr!!

Wow thats amazing they can do that and get away with it!!

The Argos website states "weight 1.3kg" whereas the six cell version weighs 1.33kg.

Things are really getting confusing now! Deliberate or otherwise, these mistakes/errors do not help the expert, let alone a novice

But they're not doing anything wrong by advertising it with 4 hours battery life, because that is what the 3 cell battery gives.... *shakes head*

i can't understand why this is a "warning" and "beware" etc, it's just reading specs before you buy something - aka common sense...

    and I wouldn't class £50 for a new battery

Read the all the reviews including Which? and all commented on the great battery life of the Samsung NC10. Checked the specification on the Samsung website only one, which identified that a 6 cell battery was standard. Picked up a copy of the Argos catalogue and found one at a decent price but no comment on battery life. When I complained to Argos about the poor battery life they refered me to their website where it gives the details of the battery life.

I do not think that I should have to look at the website to get the pertinent details of a product I wish to buy they should be in the printed catalogue. I feel that Argos are being underhand.

The price you quote for a battery must be for a one that is not made by Samsung as they are quoted at over £100.

would you buy a car without researching it if it had no or little info advertised on it?

by the sound of it you would.

maybe you would also book a holiday and pay for it without knowing how long you were going for or where you were staying?

common sense tells even the most novice of buyers to look before you buy, if this requires an hours googling to get your moneys worth then its worth it!

you have only yourself to blame for not checking up on the specs of what you were buying

the very nature of argos's business tells you that they cannot possibly put every bit of info about every product they sell

use common sense! like the rest of us, or just myself and markymoo in this case it seems
    Back by no demand whatsoever.
  • So checking the specification on the manufactures' website does not count?
