Hairdressing costs

What do you pay for a cut & blow dry? Hilites? Dry cut?

I don't use the chain hairdressers (Toni & Guy etc) but a local salon as I expect them to be able to keep their costs down but prices are getting really expensive, especially when you need to visit every 6 weeks.

In April, I paid £36 for a colour and trim.
Today, I paid £55 for all-over foil hilites.
A cut & blow dry is £30.

I am getting a bit fed up with the high costs in my area (Chelmsford/Maldon) and wondered if the charges are the same all over the country.

  • A cut and blow dry is approx £35 at the Toni & Guy in my area (East Midlands). They always do a really lovely job but it's just too expensive on a regular basis! I know that the prices in Toni & Guy vary greatly from region to region. At hairdressers other than Toni & Guy it's a little cheaper for a cut and blow dry... usually around £20 - £25.
  • I've also noticed that hairdressers in the city are more expensive than hairdressers in towns.
  • Slightly OT - but I smile when I see recommendations to goto College training salons for "cheaper but just as good". I paid £40 for a colour and cut - which is not cheap in my book - aaand - they made a real pig's ear of it.
    (It's all better now though...)

In my nearest town (East Midlands also) we have no major names but the most expensive salon charges £65-£80 for foils and colour on the remainder. I have moved to a different salon off the High Street and pay £35 tops for precisley the same thing. (Not too happy with the outcome last time as he handed me over to the Greek (i.e. no English, seriously) work-experience who blow-dried it into a style so hard I could have reduced the risk of a serious head injury if I fell over.) Always a good sign if I go back more than once; been there four times now. Still spend lots on hair though as now I indulge in quality products.

(Same treatment/styling at nearby MeadowHell would be over £100 I would think. And again, no better.)
  • I have found that decent independent salons in London cost about what you would pay at Toni & Guy in provincial towns, while London branches of Toni & Guy charge more than elsewhere (not sure about other major cities). It's basic economics; good neighbourhoods in big cities have higher costs. That and the fact that T&G is expensive anyway :D

I go to an independent salon in Central London and pay £35 for a cut & blow dry + £40 for a colour. I have it done every 3-4 months as it seems very pricey to get done more often.

  • I pay £45 for a cut and blow dry in a lovely city centre salon, so I only go three times a year and use semi-permanent box colour at home...
I could go closer to home and pay £12 but I have insolent hair and I'm afraid most people just can't wrangle it :(
Hair is on your head all the time, so it's a false economy to pay less than you can afford if you see what I mean!

Independent local hairdressers charge £27 for cut and blow dry. In the City Centre mostly chains but some independents too. Independents charge £30 and Chains £30-40. This is the price for children over 12 as well. To have my roots retouched is £10 extra and if I want foils an extra 20-30 depending on the number of them. Total bill for cut, roots and 5 foils is £50-60.

I was in one local hairdressers a year or so ago waiting while DD had her hair trimmed. A customer who was a regular went to pay for her cut and colour and was shocked it was £60 as she normally paid £36. They told her they had restructured and the price now reflected who did your hair. She said "oh that's why the Jane who normally just cuts my hair coloured it as well" as normally the junior coloured. Total rip off and she paid just £40 as that's all she had on her and said she would return later with the remainder but they said they would leave it go this once as the discussion was getting loud and everyone was all ears.

I go to the local college for my hair colour as they do a better job. I only go to third year student classes which is a bit more expensive but they are much. Though towards the end of term I've gone to Y2 classes. I've also had free colours where they have used me for exam students or visiting colourist demo.

Last time I paid £30 for cut, roots and foils and they were all fab. Normally pay £15-17 for cut and roots.

I adore having my hair done so go every 4 weeks. DD loathes having her hair done so goes as rarely as possible and the college is a no, no as they are slower and she finds it an ordeal.

I live in a small town, and a cheapish salon you can get a dry cut (which is better that it sounds) for £12, which I think is a bargain. We have a HCUK that charges £30ish for cut/blow and £50 for highlights.
I recently went to the Tony and Guy in Warrington for a treat, as I fancied something different, it cost £40 for cut/blow but they did a brilliant job, I loved it and I rarely like my new haircut at first (it has to grow on me lol!)

I go to a local town and have bleach and a colour on my hair. It costs around £60. I really like the lady that does it and also like the way she does it. I recently tried a mobile hairdresser that only charged £45 but I was a bit uncomfortable with her and also wasn't so keen on how she did it. So its back to my hairdresser now.

Would you be willing to share your secret - I'm looking for a hairdressers in Central London, and i need both a cut and colour done asap - that sounds like my kind of budget!
If you wouldn't mind pm'ing me with the details of the salon, I'd be eternally grateful!

  • I have a friend daughter whi is mobile cut my hair. She used to work in a swanky salon in knutsford and is trained by herberts. £30 for a cut and colour. She is an angel and honest, she will tell me if it's not for me.

Could you not ask if anyone in the salon will do 'extras', you may be able to get the price down that way???
