The bottom line here is that there is no perfect ISP that will suit everyone's needs.

Thats probably the best point made so far here. My mate is quite happy with his virgin account as it's a rolling month by month contract and he's renting so moves about a bit without having to worry about contracts but the usage is limited to 2GB which would be no use to me at all, I get 150GB usage for the same cost but am tied in for a year (which is fine as I've just brought a house so won't be going anywhere soon)

The word 'minefield' also sums up the state of play at the moment as I know exactly what I want & why but others like my mate who didn't know what 2GB was until I toild him & certainly my mom who has asked me to reccomend her one don't have a clue what they want & why.

every ISP will reccomend diferent packages but I've never seen one that will say 'ah no for that sort of usage your better off going with.....'

the debate of which ISP is best could go on forever as what is best differs for each type of user.

    worto.

    Hi Espresso,

Those are good points - however I'm having trouble making sense of the Newnet website.

It appears that the connection is £47 and you have to pay for hardware out of pocket (no biggie if you can migrate in and you've already got hardware). There also is a %5 surcharge for paying by any other method than Direct Debit.

If you did a solid 25GB a month this looks like a good offer - however if you're a new customer and you're doing 20GB and you use the domain name and webspace then you're better off with us.

The bottom line here is that there is no perfect ISP that will suit everyone's needs.

    Kind regards,
    Samara

The £47 connection charge was already included in the original comparison i.e. £215.40 + £47 = £262.40 for the first year with Newnet (I have no connection)

Yes I did omit the "free" modem which would be of no use to me personally but fair point and I would have though that most users would prefer to pay by DD anyway (at least customers can cancel a DD themselves).

I totally agree that there is no 'perfect ISP for all' and this is what makes choosing one so frustrating, especially as technology moves forward. The problem is that packages are put together by marketing people with the aim of company profits rather than to suit their users actual needs, which will certainly change with time with more and more available to view and download. Customers want to be charged fairly and I believe that is one of the main reason for churn.

    Hello,

I thought I'd repeat the fact that downloading LEGAL movies and LEGAL sports highlights is already available from SKY by BROADBAND and it works brilliantly. At 8mb it will work alot better.

AOL is already offerring LEGAL films to rent!!!!

LEGAL downloads of high band width data is already here!!!!

I downloaded 4 FREE and LEGAL albums from a US MUSIC WEBSITE under a free trial (doesn't have popular music!! but has all the classical albums I didn't have). It used up so much bandwidth I haven't been able to watch any SKY by broadband or download any more music for the past week just so I can stay under the 5GB. Yes, I could sign up to a 'HEAVY USAGE PACKAGE' but I don't consider what I'm currently accessing anywhere near 'HEAVY USAGE'. I will wait for the users of TT to post their experience and for the other ISPs to make new bandwidth offers.

If you're not going to download music, films, music vidoes, sports clips, tv content etc..... you don't need 8mb speed, and you are missing out on the best bits of the internet.

Is customer service being taken into account as well? I'd rather pay a little bit more for good support than to not be able to contact someone when i run into a bit of trouble.

... before getting a ISP, ALLWAYS check it meets your requirments. why would you sign up to it then complain its not enough... should have checked earlier.. only one person to blame.. wether its a good deal or not is personal choice.. if you would have done your research, maybe it wouldnt have happened

I think this site is just great. Got many ideas from it and many people prepared to take the time to offer sound advice. It is disappointing to see the occasional poor comments like the ones above. Totally unecessary and cowardly in my opinion.
Do abusive posts get removed then? The ones I was referring to have disappeared making this one I wrote look very silly.

Well, let the market decide - plenty of companies out there with lots of different packages and download limits.

Yes, Sky offer a broadband service now and AOL have downloadable films. However, the Sky service and ones like it are still a niche market. Most of us are watching TV through the TV not the PC. In time people will have to move to a better package/ISP if they find they want to use these new services. Ofcourse, if MAAF see this happening to them, they'll have to rethink their business plan - fair enough.

Just one note on downloading films. I understand the AOL service charges £20 to download King Kong, and in a format which cannot be exported to a standalone DVD player? I'd rather pay £15 for the DVD and watch it whereever and whenever I want.

    Hello,

I signed up for Madasafish last month and have been happy with the service in general.

One thing to be aware of is that even though on MSE.com it stated the down load limit for Madasafish is 5GB, it is actually the usage limit which is 5GB.

Ok, in theory if you did not upload anything at all, then 5GB is all down load, but via Madasafish you can loook at uploading and download amounts. For me I was surprised to learn that my upload in my first month was about 4.5GB, but my upload was about 0.8GB, triggering the extra payment for using more than the standard 5GB.

Forgive me if anyone has posted this before, I am a bit of a posting newbie.

    Thanks - Red Cat:rolleyes:
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)

As already stated on here MAAF are quite clear on their limits being 5gb
I use less than 5 gb per month and im on the net 8 hours or more per day.
I worked out before i signed up that i'd probably be within that limit.
If i want to downlaod more stuff or use p2p then upgrade to the 20gb service, which i'll probably do anyway.
Im pretty impressed with MAAF after a couple of early misunderstandings.
I dont see why people have to complain about limits and such things, because they havent done their research properly.
You make your choice then pay your money.

Nickyboy, I agree people should do their research first. I was only making the distinction between "download" amounts and "usage" amounts.

Aside from that, my usage last month was 6Gb exactly. But I have been invoiced for 2 lots of 1Gb extra usage. I would have thought that if I used 5Gb exactly, I would have incurred no further charge and the so, logically using one Gb more would have brought me to 6Gb.

I have telephoned to explain this, but they have to look into this and let me know.
Hoping this year is better than the last. :)
