  • Yup, get rid of those presents you don't want, or just anything you have lying around that isn't gonna be used. I looked at the rather useless Robosapien today that I bought myself for Christmas, and thought why let this take up cupboard space? I'm gonna offload it on eBay and give the money to the appeal.

It's a shame that something like this has to happen before the majority of us put our hands in our pockets, and that other needy areas of the world are probably gonna suffer more because of the amount of attention we're focusing on the areas affected by this particular tragedy. I'm no less guilty of this than the rest of you.

on the other hand donating money as a "One off" to this kind of appeal might end up inspiring people to donate things more regularly..it brings charity-giving into people's minds, etc. it's hard to predict exactly what will happen.
  • It's taken a little while to get the information but anybody wanting to give money to the Sir Lankan charity AFLEC, can pay in to Barclay's Bank, Bridgend, Glamorgan.

This is the very small charity that Andrew told us about, and which takes absolutely nothing out for management charges. (Andrew, please can you post the URL for them, I don't know how to do it - but if anybody is interested it is on the first page of this thread.)

The account which would be grateful for your money is AFLAC International Wales Branch, sort code 20-12-25, account number 50152498.

Thanks for any help you can give ......

I think you'd be surprised at how many many do actually give to charity, it's just that normally it's not in the news so we don't hear about who gives what. :-/

I know since this tragedy happened, it's been the topic of conversation with others and it's opened my eyes with regard to people who donate. People who I thought wouldn't give a donation a second thought have actually been donating regularly.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Andrew thank you for the information on Aflac! Also the fact that Sri Lanka used to be Ceylon - I would like to make a donation to them in memory of my parents who met in Ceylon during the 2nd World War! She was a nurse and he was in the Merchant Navy and they loved Ceylon/Sri Lanka and its people, they would have been dreadfully upset at the fate that has befallen this lovely country as well as all the other countries that have suffered.

I agree it doesn't matter how much you give - every single penny is going to matter!
Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.

    Just seen this on the BBC news website;

"The UK government is now the largest bilateral donor after increasing its £15m donation to £50m. "

Now that's more like it! :)

  • As you are aware a major international disaster has occurred in South East Asia and the lives of many hundreds of thousands of people have been affected.

As a result we are putting together a show on Monday 3rd January at 10:30am at the Pavilion Theatre to raise money for the Red Cross.

We have managed to get the Pantomime companies of Bournemouth Pavilion, Southampton Mayflower and Poole Lighthouse involved.

If you would like to come to the show tickets are available through the BIC / Pavilion box offices on 0870 111 3000 at £10 each unreserved.

Tickets are also available by clicking the link below.

    http://www.bic.co.uk/Box_Office/Event_Details.asp?event=2572

Please could you ask any of your friends or relatives who you think may be
interested to buy tickets and come and support this desperately needy
    cause.

    Many thanks for your support.
