i'd like to add that any miniscule amount of empathy or sympathy i had for tony b***** blair has gone down the loo....how dare he donate a measly 1 million! did he htink he was doing his bit by so generously donating a huge 1 mill of the taxpayers money.... i know hes increased it now, but come on what a j*rk- whats the matter mr blair are you saving up to invade another country and this disaster appeal is getting in your way? im so cross and feel so sorry for these people that i feel like getting so called heads of states and shaking them to make them realise the reality- hope bloody blair has a nice tan from his hols...i mean they can easily spend a few billion to invade afghanistan and then iraq which helped to create more friction and more anti western sentiment, yet the will to help doesnt come as easy when theres no oil in the land!!! blair n bush wanted to liberate the people of iraq who werent dying yet arent so keen to save the DYING people of indonesia, sri lanka, india and bangladesh! shame on them. >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(
  • Please remember though that other charities need your support. Many smaller charities find it very hard to cope when major incidents occur as many of their regular donors switch to supporting the "more important" cause. Please don't stop supporting any charities you would otherwise support, although any additional money you can spare will obviously be gratefully accepted.

Contributions to the DEC appeal can be made over the counter at any branch of Abbey, and I'd imagine all other banks offer this service as well.
  • I read today that £1 will buy 5 meals in I think Indonesia because of the differences in costs of things. so it does go a long way.

When I was in Phuket my wife and I had meals at restaurants for 20p-80p, actually one meal was in the 7/11 featured on the front cover of the sun on the first or second day of reporting!.....so seriously £1 goes a LONG way!

1p, 10p, £1, £10...it doesnt matter....if everyone does it it adds up....if everyone the uk donated 1p, that would equate to more than £1/2 million!

  • If everyone who has a referral link in their signature gave their half to the disaster fund that too would be a big help. After all they wouldn't have had any money from referrals if they weren't advertising via MSE.

I have referred two MSE users to TalkTalk this past week so that money has been donated to the fund.

Good to see that Tesco have buckets at every till point for people to put their loose change into and I read in the news that the Rotary have already collected £7500 in one shopping centre via collectors with buckets.

    I've been Money Tipped!
    **** TSUNAMI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL ****

I don't know if you are aware but if you are thinking of giving part of your ebay earnings or any money to the fund please try to make your donation Gift Aid.

This was taken from the DEC Tsunami Earthquake Appeal site:

(If you pay income or capital gains tax, equal to or above the amount we claim back, we can get the tax man to top up your donation, by paying us the tax you have already paid on this donation. This makes your donation worth an extra 28p for every pound, at no extra cost to you. In order to allow us to claim back the tax).

This is the main collection site as seen on Sky News
  • I hope most users of this site will feel as I do, and take pleasure in donating savings made by using your tips over the last year. Keep up the good work Martin. :D

I think the referral suggestion is a good one. As edinburghlass says, this is money that people are given that they wouldn't have had otherwise so it shouldn't even be missed.

It's also hard and fast cash available now, not just potential cash as in money that may have been got from savings made from this site, so send it along. :)

  • There are a lot of different companies that have 'offshored' much of their back office procesing/call centre staff to SE asia (particularly to Chennai (Madras) and Sri Lanka). The ones I have come across are:

    Aviva (Norwich Union)
    British Airways
    Swiss Air
    Tesco
    Bank of Scotland
    Axa
    RSA
    Experian (part of GUS)
    Amex
    BT
    British GAs
    GE

This ignores the many IT companies that have their code 'cut' off shore to minimise costs...this is deemed best practice by the majority of massive IT operations in the world (IBM,EDS, CSC, Cap G etc etc)

undoubtedly there are more and those companies have SAVED £Millions as staff costs are up to 50% cheaper. Therefore does anyone else know of any other companies that have done this and have any ideas of how we can get them to donate

  • I firstly would like to pass on my Condolences to all the families who have suffered losses and are in such desperate situations.
I know it is not the best method of raising cash by spending money on ourselves, but if you feel you need to spend at this time trade with companies who have shown a history of charitable donations.
This might be felt by some to be inaproriate at thids time, but this is a oppertunity to use our moneysaving trate to short medium and long term use.
I use a variety of CASHBACK schemes.

One thing to bear in mind when making donations is that 50% of Oxfams generated money goes on admin and 20% with the Red Cross. I am not sure how it works with this particular disaster, if some is still swallowed up in admin costs but I donated £40 to the Red Cross Tsunami appeal rather than Oxfam. Plus with the Red Cross you can claim the tax back (by ticking a tax declaration on the donation form) so that in reality my donation was £52.
