This might be a daft question, but is there any particular charity that's 'better' than another?

The reason I ask, is that there's something in the back of my mind about seeing an article or news report that said some well known charities have overheads that were classed as being too high. The advice was that if you wanted more of your donation to actually go to helping the cause directly, then you should be careful about which charity you opted to donate to.

I can't remember enough about the article though.  :-/

Are the above mentioned charities all 'good'? (Strange question I know, as all charities by definition are good, but you know what I mean). I would prefer my donation to be used to help rather than being channelled into admin costs.

    Hi,

I saw an item on the news saying something similar... many charities take a huge chunk of the donations in order to cover admin fees, but they also said that the DEC have promised to only take 1p per donation to cover their admin fees.

So please donate directly to the DEC as they are an umbrella for approx 12 charities including oxfam, christian aid, save the children & the red cross.
They have all been in the areas for many years so are already set up & ready to help.

    saw this on bbc news;

"British charity Oxfam has appealed for an extra 10,000 volunteers to work in its shops to cope with the high volume of donations."

I was wondering if anyone had come across any charities looking for homemade things.  I know that some charities look for blankets, baby clothes and even teddies and often put knitting patterns etc on their sites.
I can't afford to donate any more, I have put some cash into collection buckets but would still love to help by making things if they want them.  I've knitted little teddies in the past for children after disasters but wondered if any of the charities are at this stage yet?
    ???
So want to help, but really not sure what to do.... :-/

There is a new organisation being set up to look at 'what to do next'. They will be asking for non-money donations and effort donations and have contacted me about helping to publicise it.

I'm just checking the legitimacy out at the moment, but providing all is fine I will be including details in the next tip.

So yes there is more that can be done than sending money :)

The partners of the firm that I now work for are going to match every £ that the staff raises with another £.

I am going to donate £50 when the office reopens on Tuesday.  So that will turn into £100 and hopefully, with Gift Aid, it will then turn into £125 or thereabouts at no extra cost to me.

The firm has chosen to donate to DEC.

It will be really good to see what non-pecuniary help we can render too!
