BBC News: The British public have donated £45m in three days to help the victims of the Asian tsunami, say relief charities.

Makes you proud to be British. God bless you all!

Have a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

    Don't give up the cause!

One thing to bear in mind when making donations is that 50% of Oxfams generated money goes on admin and 20% with the Red Cross.
Likewise under 20% admin for Save the Children (stats here) which I particularly like as a charity, although I've never liked the name!

We should all do what we can given what we have been saving with this site. I'm donating my rpoints balance in cash at the end of the month when I can withdraw and I'm trying to get some free money from a matched bet with binarybet.com. I will donate all as giftaid.
  • Just my opinion (for what it's worth) but I believe donating to one central fund such as DEC will be the most effective way of ensuring a coordinated method
    of help.

Only today one paper had appeals from 5 separate charities for the earthquake appeal!

As the country has united to donate money I think the charities should unite and pool the resources for the benefit of all the victims.

I would like to end by saying God bless, but after this tragedy my faith has been shaken, I just do not know what I believe in anymore except maybe in the inherent goodness & generosity of people

I've been 'pushing' for people to use this charity because I think it's about the best.

    Is it not?

Blimey - what on earth did you buy at only an hour into the new year to spend £25!!!! Or perhaps I misread :-/ Have to say I was rather shaken to see the footage on Sky News though, and have put a donation through the DEC website. Dont' think I've spent that much on ice cream though ???

  • Hi Eeveryone,

Thanks for the email Martin, i absoulutely agree with all comments so far.

I had, possibly like many other members, already donated. I gave all of mine and my husbands christmas present money (yes we still get a big chunck of cash off our parents to spend on what we like in the sales-- it's a traditon just for old one's!).

However, when your email arrived I felt somwewhat united with other members of MSE. I have made a considerable saving during 04 as a result of tips in your newsletters, most of it off my mortgage because I have loads of credit on interest free offset against it. However, as with many others, I had already spent this saving but we have agreed that we will not earmark the saving for the next couple of months so we can continue to send money on a monthly basis.

It would be brilliant if Martin (or at least his web technician) could design a front page counter where members could register their donation (annonymously) and where we could keep track of our collective effort -- this would be such a motivator and give a sense of togetherness to, it would be something we could be really proud of. Just an idea??

I pray that the emergency and aid services can reach those in need as soon as possible. I also pray that, with the love and support from around the world, these people can rebuild their lives. I am sure they will find the stregnth, think positive as our spirits will carry these thoughts forward!
