URGENT: SE Asian Flood Disaster - Donate Money
Comments
-
Medecins Sans Frontieres have this to say on http://www.uk2.msf.org/donations/
"The exceptional generosity of MSF's supporters around the world has allowed us temporarily to suspend our appeal for funds.
MSF teams are scaling up our medical assistance to people injured by this disaster and those threatened by infectious diseases. But at the moment these emergency operations in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, and Burma do have enough money to push ahead and start the work.
So we have suspended our online donation page for the Indian Ocean Floods Disaster Appeal. And we are no longer seeking gifts by post or telephone until we know more clearly what will be the needs beyond this first emergency phase. "0 -
Give til it hurts. This site has saved us all so many pennies, and based on the assumption that it will continue to do so, I vote we should give up ALL our spare cash. If we keep saving we'll have more spare by next month surely? Saving for a rainy day is great, but only if you can recognise that rainy day and not cling onto your cash in case it rains a bit harder next week.
Just being a prickly conscience ::) Let you (anyone) for a moment put yourself in the position of a fisherman in Sri Lanka, who has lost not only his home and half his family (just trying to imagine losing half my family leaves a hole in my heart), but also his boat, which is the only way he can hope to provide for the remainder of his family. If you knew this man, would you give him your spare change, or would you go short yourself in order to help?
How much have you spent in the January sales? Really need all that stuff?:TProud to be dealing with my debts :T0 -

Thank you for contacting the Interactive Customer Care Team.
There are no plans to use jackpot money for the S E Asia appeal. We
cannot use jackpot money to fund this appeal because we have a binding
contract with our ticket holders whereby we must pay out in the event
of a winning ticket.
Camelot is responsible for operating The National Lottery and for
raising the money for Good Causes. The money is allocated to five Good
Causes, as set out by Parliament, and therefore cannot be used for
individual causes or events without legislative change. Camelot has no
responsibility for the allocation of Good Causes money.
We understand that the Big Lottery Fund board are to have a meeting in
January to look at their international grant programme. However, the
Chairman, Sir Clive Booth has already made an approach to meet very
shortly with the Disaster Emergency Committee to see how best lottery
money can be utilised to help in the long term regeneration of the
area.
Camelot has donated £100,000 to the disaster fund appeal (via the
Daily Mail). The devastation caused by the Tsunami is unimaginable, so
Camelot and its shareholders wanted to contribute to help those
affected. The donation is from Camelot 's profits and not from lottery
funds allocated to the Good Causes. Many Camelot staff have already
donated to the disaster appeal and any money which Camelot employees
raise for any registered charity will, as usual, be matched funded by
the Camelot Foundation.

There are no credit card charges on donations to the appeal.
If you have a card with cashback you can donate the cashback you earn to the appeal
If you have a card with an interest free period then you can donate the interest you'd save / make.0 -
Thank you for stopping the board for 3 minutes. I hadn't realised the time. I don't suppose many other sites on the internet would have stopped. Well done. Very thoughtful.\o/ \o/ \o/ \o/ \o/Wise Men Still Seek Him!0

Another free donation link from me:
from
http://www.fool.co.uk/news/comment/2005/c050105d.htm
"Click here to read more about charitable giving and The Motley Fool will donate 15p to DEC – and it won't cost you a penny. Only one click per reader will count! So, if we hit our target of 33,333 clicks, we'll donate £5,000 to DEC."0 -
Re donating unwanted foreign currencies, I have just discovered that BA is directing all collections under their "Change for Good" programme to the tsunami appeal. Extract from their website:
"Thank you for your interest in making a donation to the Tsunami appeal.
As you may know, British Airways and UNICEF have been working together for over 10 years now on the special fundraising initiative ‘Change for Good’ whereby British Airways customers donate their left over foreign currency to UNICEF’s work during their flight. To date this has raised over £18 million.
If you would like to find out more about Change for Good please click here.
During January, all Change for Good donations will go to the Tsunami appeal. " AND
"Until 18 April 2005, you will be able to take your old currencies, and any other currencies you may like to donate – even £s if you wish – to any HSBC branch in the UK where you will find special collection envelopes available to make your donation. So please hunt through your drawers for any old francs, pesetas or deutschmarks and let UNICEF put them to work, changing children’s lives around the world."
Check on BA's website to see how you can donate.0 -
I hope you don't think this is spam, I am not affiliated with any websites at all.
I sometimes play online poker at pokerstars.com. They are taking donations and will double them until the 11th. It is easy to set up an account there and you could just put in the amount you want to donate and never play a hand of poker if you didn't want to. They are a very reputable site, please check if you don't believe me. I hope this post is in the spirit of this website. Here is the email I received from them.
Dear PokerStars Player,
You all know about the tragic events as a result of the recent tsunamis in Asia. We at PokerStars are pitching in with you, our players, to help the victims of this disaster.
We have created some special "tournaments" (not really tournaments, but a simple way for you to contribute) and an account to which you can transfer donations to the relief fund. PokerStars will match every dollar contributed to this fund (currently well over $75,000) until January 11.
Donating is as easy as registering for a tournament or making a player-to-player money transfer. To register for the Donation Tournaments, visit your PokerStars game lobby, click "Tourney" then "Special" and look for "Tsunami Relief." Once there, you may choose to register for $1, $5, $10, $20, $50 or $100. To donate using a player-to-player transfer, click "Requests" at the top left of your game lobby, then click "Transfer Funds." The "player" you want to transfer to is "ReliefEffort" in city "Tsunami Aid Areas". You may transfer any amount you wish.
The amount you register for or transfer will constitute your donation which will help provide medicine, clothing, food and shelter to those affected by the deadly tsunami. Your donation will then be matched dollar for dollar by PokerStars and donated to the International Federation of Red Cross, one of the world's hardest-working and most respected charities.
We hope you will join us in lending a helping hand; each dollar you can spare will give two dollars to help those who have lost everything.
Once again, our heartfelt thoughts go out to all affected by this tragedy.
Thank you in advance for your thoughts and contributions,
Lee H. Jones
