thanks for trying Mrme
the link is still working right now where I am, so it must have been busy (part of me hopes) when you tried - it will be working again in the future.
As you say, other sites are working, so everyone please try them if you can't get through,

To be honest i dont think i have been so stunned since 9/11 WTC.
I am saddened by the events in Thailand, which is by far the best country i have visited...fantastic scenery, cities and most importantly great people. My wife and i had our honeymoon at Laguna Phuket and we were thinking about going again next year. We will still go though, though maybe 2 years time.
Made my donation.Stevie Coppell's record breaking blue and white royal army - championship winners 2005-60 -
I must agree with some of the previous posters, that sending money to many charities from the Western World in an emergency, doesnt ensure that the intended recipients ever get a reasonable proportion, much of it is used up in administration and logistical overheads ???
Not knocking any charity though, they're all making a tremendous effort in the wake of a terrible tragedy.
I have some knowledge of the province of Aceh, Indonesia, when I visited Sumatra in 2002 as a charity worker. I know the people in this primitive to our standards region, will need money more than anything else, at this time. Unless it is airlifted nothing will get into this region by land and sea for weeks if it's donated from the UK.
There are various registered charities in Indonesia with accounts to whom you can pay money into Indonesian Rupiahs from a UK bank. Their exchange rate has weakened and your money will go a long way. A family can eat for less than a pound per day.
I have just been emailed by charity contact whos is in touch with a volunteer colleague near Banda Aceh(provincial capital), she fears there maybe more than 60,000 perished. At the moment there is an Urgent need for 'Instant foods/drink', medical aid & plastic body bags .

Made a donation.
Something like this really puts the grab it board (one of my favourites) into perspective doesn't it?

Can I just point out that ANY donation no matter how small will be welcomed and greatfully received.
Even if people can only afford to donate £1 it will still go towards making the aid pot larger. I think it's not a good idea to suggest what people should donate, this is very much a personal decision.
I had a conversation with a friend who read this thread and noticed someone had made a comment about how everyone should try to donate at least 1% of their annual salary. She figured that if that was the kind of donation people were making, there would be no point in sending her fiver as it was too small an amount and she was embarrassed.
I told her not to be so bloody stupid and get it sent, which she did. But I do wonder if there are others reading threads like this and thinking they wouldn't be able to send much so what's the point?
Think about it, if 1000 people sent £1 each, that's another £1000 to help. Imagine if everyone thought they wouldn't bother donating as it wasn't much? £1000 less with which to help.
So please, ignore any amounts you may have seen suggested. There will be as many people sending small amounts as there are sending larger sums. If you want to donate, ANYTHING you can spare WILL help.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Does anyone know if the donations need to be moneytary (is that the right word?) as i am able to collect together with a little effort a reasonably large number of medicines including anti-biotics. I heard the need for these was approaching as disease is likely to cause a worsening of the crisis.
I was watching the BBC news this morning and there was an item about a charity collecting summer clothes and drugs called International Buddhist Relief Organisation in Birmingham they give to everyone regardless of faith.
If you want to make a donation to the IBRO, you can contact them on 0121 382 7108

Interesting reading on the Sky News website:
£10 million in available funds has been made available overnight with an extra £6.5 million in uncleared funds, that's a total of £16.5 million. The DEC telephone lines have received over 400,000 donations.
We, the British public have quashed the amount promised by our goverment.
A spokes person from the DEC has stated that no more than 1p in the £1.00 will be spent on administration.0 -
i think i'm going to go for the red cross - i kind of get the feeling they are good at field logistics; distribution of supplies etc. (ticking the tax box for 28% extra)
weren't the yanks going to do a 'feed the world' tune this christmas? has it happened? i wonder if any will be diverted.Multi-tasking is a way of ensuring you don't enjoy any of them.0 -
An important request has been placed on the 1st page of MSE Click here I don't ordinarily check the main site regularly, but simply follow the Money Tip links. So click, read & absorb. All the important information can be found at this page.
Regards
Tony
My previous post said that £16.5 million had been pledged, this figure now stands at £20 million.0
