Recommend places to live... in Derby/Nottingham

Work may well move myself & partner to Derby/Nottingham area early next year. It's most likely that my partner would work in Nottingham city centre while I'd be in Derby. I drive and she doesn't so really it needs to be <1hr commute for her to the city.
Ideally we'd like a 3-4 bed semi or detached house with reasonable to large sized rooms, not overlooked at the rear (at the moment we look out over open countryside). Looking around there seem to be many houses for sale, not many with the kind of space and freedom we'd look for though. No children yet but may have in the future...
So which places to look at and where to avoid? Obviously we expect to pay a reasonable amount and around £200k would be a fair expectation.
Thanks
Chris

We are in Hucknall, which is north of Nottingham. There is the tram link into Nottingham, which takes about 30 minutes. Also try Bestwood villiage, which is is also on the tram line. Hucknall is very near Junction 27 of the M1, which is one up from the A38, which I understand goes towards Derby.

There are other areas, but some are not so desirable.I love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like?:A

I used to live in Stanley Common which is handy for both if you drive.
I would research the public transport options carefully so good access for the non-driver(plenty of options and early/late running) and choose based on that then easy access to Derby by car or Public as a back up.
Where in Derby? A lot has changed but getting across/around the city was time consuming in rush hour 20years ago.0 -
Hiya,
I live on the west of Nottingham, close to the A52 for derby and good bus routes..im less than 5 mins from the proposed tram route so getting into the city will be quicker assumings it built
good paces for both...
borrowash is lovely - it is half way between the two with a good rail service into both derby and nottingham would take about half an hour by train from there. just did a quick rightmove look and 3/4 bed houses under 200K - it is great for links A52 - derby centre 20 mins, quite rural
Toton/Trowell are not bad again on the edge of Nottingham and easily commutable
If i could afford it the village of Attenborough would be my choice, its a village really but within the city of nottingham, very good links - bus to nottingham about half and hour, got a rail station too, commute to derby by train or car half hour ish
has the fab nature reserve and river trent on your door step - again properties within your price range
from attenborough, you have amemities close by, supermarkets etc and a fantastic pub in beeston - all of 10 mins on the bus
if you do a rightmove search type in one of those areas and you will get the area which sits between both derby and nottingham.
I dont know derby so not so sure where would be good.
hope that helps0 -
I know somebody already mentioned it but Bestwood Village is very nice, and if you were looking for new build then George Wimpey have a development there called Brackens Court. As mentioned there is a tram right nearby that takes you into Nottingham.
I live in between the two, about equal distance from both Derby and Nottingham, and on bus routes to Nottingham.
Possible areas to look at.. Ripley (has a nice area/development called Cromford View) and West Hallam is very nice for properties around your budget0 -
Thanks for the advice, I'd be working on the South side of Derby in the Sinfin area so the A52 works fine for getting me there. That's some really good options to look at - I appreciate the help.
Kind regards

My parents now live in Trowell and I grew up in Beeston lol
Avoid close to the city centre, I would say look at the villages just outside but to sure about transport (nuthall, kimberley, Breaston, etc).0 -

Agree (but am biased as I've lived there for the past 5 years :rotfl:). It's good access for the A52 for Derby. It is pricey though...for £200,00 you might get a basic 3 bed detached in Compton Acres (a modern development in West Bridgford). Prices are more in the traditional parts where this would get you a terraced house dependingon the street. So depends on what you want for your money....traditional or modern. A word about schools...excellent catchment schools both primary and secondary. Lots of families, good access to the city (bus service) and houses sell really fast.
Other areas...
Beeston's nice (though some areas you'll find lots of students...so beware), so is Mapperley (but not good for Derby). Some of the other areas OPs have already mentioned.
All the best in your search. Anything else you want to know, message me. :beer:0 -
Beeston isn't as nice as when I lived there but still agreat place to live if you can get a house there and here the A520
-
have you tried searching on rightmove?
I live in mansfield which is about 20-25 miles from nottingham city centre, but it has regular train and bus links and is so much cheaper than nottingham in regards to house prices.
I think it be a hard push for a 3-4 bed house on the outskirts of nottingham for 200k, but in mansfield you can buy a very nice place. The Berry Hill area is the most desirable area.0
