Just to add my 2 cents...
My English might show a few errors as I do not know the correct terms for names (besides the usual spelling and grammar errors :))
In Sweden (where I live) it is very common to have several given names. It is not necessary the first of those names which is the name you are referred by. So personally I have three names John David Peter (not my real names but I do have three) beside my family name Smith. All names are printed in the passport but nowhere in my passport is my "main" first name specifically noted.
I always use my main name (which is registered in the Swedish state register) which happen to be Peter...
So it could happen to me as well and yes I think Jet2 have not done this correctly.
It would have been different if the OP had booked himself as Jack Smith..

You seem to have missed the point. The name on the Boarding pass has to be the same as the one in the Passport......to the letter! Which is why I check, then check again, before confirming flight details.

I think the original poster is very lucky he didn't get caught out on an overbooked Xmas flight to Australia where his mistake in not knowing his first name could have cost him several thousand pounds.

He should just put it down as lesson learnt, and it won't be happening again. Any slurs or claims of blackmail against Jet2 should be removed because they have been shown to be incorrect.

No, I do not think I missed the point...
In my (Swedish) passport it says John David Peter Smith. My name is Peter Smith and that is what I book tickets in. I only wanted to point out that other nationalities can have different information in their passport. In some cases the equivalent to first name happens to be third given name...

    I don't even see it as a rip-off.

It was the OP's mistake when booking tickets, he was charged the stated fee for rectifying that error.
  • I've missed these scams!

Jet2 would be obliged to accept 'David Smith' if it was noted in the 'official observations' section. However, it isn't - and therefore, the original poster is incorrect.

Why do so many people blame the airline when it's their own fault?

The books are sitting just there on the floor.

And in that case Jet2 would probably be understanding but whatever the main or designated first name is on the passport must be the name the tickets are booked in and that name is clearly stated on a British passport, which is the issue here
  • Many people refered to the booking having to be "name as stated on the passport." My passport contains both my first and middle names, and no doubt if my father were a big football fan and named me after the 1971 Arsenal squad, all those names too!
However the Jet2 booking form asks for "first name" so I'm afraid Jet 2 were within their terms and conditions to blackmail you in this way.
