Depends Tigerlilly. All pups are different but i have found that crate trained pups remain dry at night providing they have not come from a puppy farm or taken from their mum too early. Some will not soil their own beds but some do. I have had no problem with mine but he was 13 weeks old when taken from his mum and dad and they lived on a farm so housebreaking our pup seems easier and quicker.

I'm no expert on house breaking as i've never had to do it having Rescues, but this seems too long for a Pup to hang on? I wouldn't expect a newborn baby to go this long so the same with a Pup? Could someone nip out in the middle of the night with her?

BUT SHE'S 11 MONTHS OLD! She should be able to hold it by now, and she has held it for longer! It's so hard.

You have not had her since she was a pup though. How long have you had her? If not long then the move to another family could have put her housetraining backward quiet a lot. You have to go back to basics. Have you a photo of her? I love GSDs :D
  • Do not let this set you back - she has done really well so far, you must keep up with the 'go out, wee treat and praise' routine and not get discouraged and let it slip now - new knowledge is not assimilated overnight in the dogs brain, and she has developed a bit if a habit which you are working in changing - it will take a little time, but you must maintain a consistent approach.

I wonder if there's a bit of seperation anxiety going on here too?

Does she seem to be better when there is somebody around/in the same space. i.e does she only seem to wee at night or during the day when she's on her own?
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

There isn't necessarily any rhyme nor reason to it. She will keep having accidents for a bit ( and I used to swear mine was doing it on purpose just to annoy me - I used to stand on the top of the stairs and sniff to work out what I was going to walk down into!) but the gaps between them will get longer as you work on it. 31 hours is good going for a starting point.
I know how horrible it is, but it is do-able, it really is. Mine was older than yours when I got her, and I used to swear she was half camel on the water storage front, but now I can leave her for hours. It might happen quickly, it might take a while, but you'll get there. Think about your doggy's good points, when it all gets a bit much, I'm sure there's much more to her that a wee machine.
(I found though that getting mine dry over night was the last thing that we got sorted, and the most frustrating.)
You said before that your partner was letting her out at 7am? So did he not do that this time? Maybe you could turn that into his share of the dog-sitting - the 7am wee and clearing up chore. :D
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Hope you're having a better day today Kat, mine has not gone so well. We'd had 4 dry days and 3 dry nights, then yesterday evening we had 3 accidents, altho one of them was a dribble cos I caught her and stopped her. Then again this lunch time. Last night she'd been taken out as much as normal and had even pee'd outside about 15mins before one of the accidents.
Yesterday we went to Norfolk dog day, she was really good and so enjoyed meeting lots of pups and dogs and people. I wonder if that day out was maybe a bit much for her and has set her back a bit.
Anyway back to square one again and I just hope that now I can keep her dry for the rest of the day. Fingers crossed!
  • it is not back to square one - your dog is on a big learning curve, and it takes time for them to get the hang of what it is you want them to do - remember, they do not know the rules, and obviously canot understand what we expect of them - it takes time, but you are making progess - do not be discouraged, just keep on with the routine and be consistent - I think you are doing really well!

:D Awww thank you, thats made me feel better. I felt sooo annoyed earlier when she had her accident. I know its my fault not hers. So really was just annoyed with myself for letting it happen.
Heres hoping to a dry afternoon anyway.
