I wish new puppy purchasers would realise just how much the puppy breeder can do to help with the toilet training issue. If puppy is allowed access to the outside while still with mum, they will start to learn even before they leave the breeder that going outside with the sky above them is the place to go, and with paving or grass under foot - then, when they get home, they automatically know they have to find those sorts of conditions to eliminate in.Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0

Hi Rachel and Bumble,
How is it going? We are at Dry Time = 28hrs, if we can make it past 48hrs that will be a record.
I have been taking her out more then I used to and she does 'pee' pretty much on demand, so I am hoping we might get somewhere soon.
Have a dry weekend!

hey, well done :T- keep up the good work - do not get complacent - a week or so spent doing this really intensively, the gradually lengthening the time between going outdoors may well crack the problem, and avoid many months of puddles and anguish!0 -
Trust me, I won't get complacent, thats what happened with the first pup and I won't do that again!
Dry time = 31hrs

We have a 13 week old puppy. We got him last saturday. He is doing very well with his housebreaking. I've crated him. He is in the crate at night and when left alone in the house. He asks to go out by scratching the door but if you are too late then he will wee but i'm very pleased that he asks. He never poos indoors just wees but having Laminate flooring it is so easy to mop up. I use Formula H to wash the floors and it smells lovely
It really does depend on you and how quick and patient you are.

Guess I must not be patient then!
DRY TIME = 0!!
Took her outside at 1am, she did a pee, at 9am she had done 2 pees inside! She doesn't have water overnight, no idea where she stores it all!
I am so upset and frustrated again. My husband makes me feel worse coz he says, she'll be ok, she will get there eventually, have some patience, I bet other dogs are like this etc. But its ok for him as he doesn't have to deal with it everyday like I do, its easy at the weekend when we are both here, but in the week, when I am solely responsible for keeping her dry all day long, as well as trying to earn some money, taking them for walks, trying to lose weight, trying to tidy the house, try to look after all our house admin as well as looking after and setting up our self-admin dmp etc it does get me down. AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THIS WAY?
Maybe this means I will be a terrible mother, maybe I just can't handle the stress or maybe I am not patient enoughMy darling boy born December 20110 -
It can be hard house breaking a pup - but hang in there, you will get there will patience and persistence. The advice on this thread is excellent - but I do disagree with the idea that you don't tell your pup off for toileting indoors. I work full time and did chastise my pup for toileting indoors and she was clean within a week and hasn't had an accident since. Prior to that we had tried treats and cleaning it up silently but she simply didn't get it.
I am not advocating beating the pup, or rubbing their noses in their mess, but a firm "No! Naughty girl" before taking her outside worked for me and Ruby.0 -

Poor you Kat - I feel for you!
He probably thinks he's helping in what he says but it's the whole male - female language barrier getting in the way! It sounds very familiar to me, I don't have kids either and most of my friends with kids say puppies are way harder at first but they get easier than kids quicker (if you get what I mean...)
Raksha - We were very hopeful about our puppy (Ruby) going to the toilet outside as at the breeders she seemed to be following her mum outside and peeing etc. I distinctly remember thinking that she seemed more advanced than we were expecting.... I don't know whether it was the change of environment that unsettled her - who knows?
My other half had the joy of finding Ruby this morning in a kitchen with diahorrea and sick in her crate, up the door etc. he does not have the strongest stomach for these things at the best of times so he wasn't too happy. She seems fine this morning by the way!
Add to that we have a three legged cat who suffers from FLUTD (cat cystitis) on and off - any stress seems to go straight to his bladder and after a run in with Ruby yesterday he is now spraying everywhere, there is evidence of blood in his urine this morning! So most likely off to the vets for [STRIKE]us[/STRIKE] me tomorrow.....
I feel your pain Kat!

I also do not leave water down through the night and it does help. I pick it up at 8pm each night. He does not wee at night at all in his crate. I get up each morning at 7am to let him out for a wee and poo.
Watch for the obvious times that your puppy will need to toilet, such as immediately after a meal or a big drink, upon waking up, after a play session and any other time in between! Ensure that the puppy is in the correct toilet location at these times. If, while watching your puppy in your house, you observe the pre-toileting behaviours such as sniffing, circling, etc. (it will vary from one puppy to the next), rush the puppy to the backdoor, keeping him/her close to floor level so that they can see where they are being taken and how to get to their correct toilet spot.
Thoroughly clean the areas where the puppy has had accidents. The scent of urine or faeces indoors will stimulate a puppy to stop and toilet there. Use this fact to your advantage by collecting any poo in the house and placing them in the grassy area where you would like the puppy to toilet and he/she will hopefully believe that this area is his/her chosen toilet.
If she/he does wee or poo in the house then you are not paying sufficient attention. Remember, your puppy's Mum cleaned up without scolding - attempting to reprimand the puppy for a bodily function will only create anxiety.
Try to remain calm and accepting because your stress will be obvious to your puppy and may undermine his/her confidence and trust in you as a consistent, reliable natured leader0 -

I'm no expert on house breaking as i've never had to do it having Rescues, but this seems too long for a Pup to hang on? I wouldn't expect a newborn baby to go this long so the same with a Pup? Could someone nip out in the middle of the night with her?0
