Miele worth the money?

  • Worth every penny and more. My mother's 20 year old washing machine and a dryer still going strong and working beautifully. They are usually more economical and work better, eg. wash, wring and dry much better, are more silent, don't break down often. When they do, the after service is excellent, this is a huge consideration for me.
The only time I would perhaps buy cheaper but more often is if I considered moving in the near future. In that case, one doesn't know whether they can fit all their appliances in the new space, so no point buying something that lasts many years if not sure whether one can keep them. Having said this, beside Miele I also have some Siemens appliances (oven, gas cooker and the washing machine) and they are also terrific and a bit cheaper than Miele.
As for the fridge, I have a Liebherr fridge (another top German make). Easily keeps the food fresher for up to 10-15 days longer than AEG fridge. True, fridges are appliances that break down the least of all others (supposedly), but if you can afford it, go for Liebherr, you will be astonished how long fruit and veg keeps crisp and fresh in it, I hardly throw away anything since having this amazing fridge.

My MIL has a Miele and I desperately want one too! Its so quiet, you'd never know it was spinning and she's had it for about 10 years with only minor repairs needed. She has 5 children and used to have to replace her Whirlpool washing machines every 2 years before.

They are expensive but definately a cut above the rest.

my Miele washing machine must be a dud. it doesn't wash as well as my old 27 year old zanussi and sounds like an aeroplane taking off when it is spinning. Maybe because it's on a tiled floor in a utility room but i certainly couldn't recommend it to anyone. I've only had it just over a year and wish i'd gone for a Bosch or Siemens which I would have done but for bad experiences with a bosch dishwasher and vacuum and knowing that siemens is the same company
  • melb - I remember you posting about your Miele washing machine when you first got it. Did you not get any satisfaction from Miele? I had always assumed they would have excellent customer service so if they did not sort this out for you they would go down very much in my estimation. Considering the price of their goods I would have thought they would fall over themselves to maintain their reputation as being the best....did they send someone out to look at it for you?

Are you sure that it has been levelled? You should be able to adjust the feet to get it right.

hi there thanks for remembering my other post. I did ring Miele and they were quite helpful over the phone but just sent me some washing powder (their own make) which was kind. they suggested it might not be levelled so we got in touch with comet where we bought it and they came out and supposedly levelled it. they did say they could send an engineer out (this is Miele) but that if no fault was found with the machine it would cost me £80 which put me off a bit. Put it this way if I put a pair of trousers in the old machine i had with mud stains or grass stains which had just happened it would have taken them straight out but this machine doesn't even on a 60 degree wash which I use a lot.

I have always bought cheaper washing machines and dryers. Over the past 19 years I have washing machines that last about 2 - 3 years. I usually go for Zanussi or Hotpoint. I rarely pay for them to be fixed because it is usually an expensive fix. Or it has been in the past when I have got someone out. Something to do the drum and ball bearings. (if I remember correctly) Again my latest is not worth fixing. My friend has always bought Meile and they last on average 10 years. She has just bought a new dryer after 12 years!

I have found a Miele W562 for £649 and a Miele Dryer T284 for £569. That is more than twice the price for a similar washing machine. They say they last up to 20 years but often for 10. At the moment they are offering a 5 year warrantly.

My friend is trying to talk me into a Miele but she always buys the best and always has.

I will not be going into debt to buy a Miele but is it worth it?

On paper Miele and other premium makes look good and a 10 or even 20 year lifespan sounds great but....

Technology can change a lot in that time and running cost of machines can and do fall. In addition rubber seals perish and require replacing.

After much thought we went the route of buying a low cost John Lewis machine with a 5 year warrenty.
(circa £320 total cost) The assumption is it will be replaced with another similar machine the first time it breaks down once the warrenty has expired i.e. after 5 or more years.

This is "life cycle cost" rather than "total cost of ownership" thinking and it works for us.
