i've always thought of is a household income. of course it can be single or joint.

The banks didn't though when handing out loans, are they really handing out 4x joint incomes now ?, that's not going to end well. 50% of relationships/marriages split.

it goes back to the average household vs average salary argument

One I don't want to get into!

Whatever it is, it seems to be able to afford homes!

The liars and thieves running the show have, with the help of their puppets in the media, managed to change the general public mindset on this one.

It is now seen as acceptable, obvious and even logical to view dual income households as the model on which to base "affordability".

Only a fool would see this (and the HPI it has helped fuel) as a good thing, rather than the socially damaging and economically unsustainable practice that it is.

we need to return to average price of about 3.5 single income.

    simples.

To me at least, it certainly makes more sense to use average household income when determining affordability.

Perhaps you could use average salary for all single mortgages and average household for all joint mortgages, and then see what they both look like? Is that even possible?

i would imagine that depends on credit rating and also what proportion the two salaries are. if one is much more than the lower salary, which was my case.

i was offered up 5x joint in January, i took the 3.5 times option. one salary is 26k and the other four times that one. it depends on circumstances i guess.

banks cannot take responsibility for relationships unfortunately - are you asking for relationship advice to be offered as part of the mortgage service ;)

Agree, but it's unlikely to happen, women have been shafted, they have gone out to work to better their families lives (couples I'm talking here), yet their wage has been eaten up by HPI as couples outbid each other to get 'that house', leaving them no better off and their children in care from 7am until 6pm.

Well that's not really the average situation for the UK, on the other hand I know where to come if I need a loan.:D

I love this notion that all women should be at home with a pinny on. I can just imagine Germaine Greer's head spinning off her shoulders if she read some of this stuff.
