check your standard deviation with an online standard deviation calculator. i worked it out with a calculator and its exactly the same as what an online calculator says

q2 why do you mention a t test, that is not needed?

SPSS does "descriptive statistics". Just need to make sure the data is entered correctly first, then when you select the variables in the descriptive statistics it should be right. If the error is one of rounding it is likely to be the person using SPSS :)

I don't remember working out ever needing to be shown in Psychology - results from SPSS output was used for everything at degree and postgraduate level (though blatant copy and pasting from SPSS was not considered acceptable, you had to create your own tables). Showing working out helped in A level maths though as you could pick up marks just for showing working out, even if the final answer was wrong.

I would definitely justify which tests are selected though.

It's a shame that your University lecturers couldn't have given better feedback on your previous work than "30%" or some extra input on it, especially when you find it quite difficult. I know most people don't go to study Psychology for the statistics part of it though :)

I recommend a book called Discovering Statistics Using SPSS written by Andy Field. I think it would be worth your while working through his examples, then hopefully that will make what's going on a whole lot clearer. It's a rather expensive book, but is big and very good. While it may be in your library I recommend buying it as it will be a good reference, especially if you move onto the more advanced inferential tests later.

I can't recommend this book highly enough, there isn't another stats text out there that is as thorough but accessible as this one.

If you don't want to buy it, go to the library and work through the relevany examples. It really will be worth the effort.

If you still need help with the box plots send me a pm. Covered it this year in masters. The Andy Fields book is brilliant and I recommend you check it, explains everything in a simple way.
  • I'd also chirp in to recommend "SPSS 15 Made Simple" by Kinnear and Gray (obviously search for the SPSS version you're using). It tells you how to conduct the tests you want to and also what to search for in the output file.

http://whichtest.info/ - can help in choosing an appropriate test.

    I hope this helps.
