I quite like the small discrete ones, just like sotonsaverjen mentions above, unfortunately when I got mine 14 years ago (OMG!!!) I got a rose on my shoulder.
Its tacky and poorly done and I hate it but am worried by 'lazer removal'
Anyway, what I have come on to say is beware of future health issues with tattoos.
I recently had a problem with my immune system, and to cut a long story short, my body began to reject my 14 year old tattoo, making it very sore, and red and raised (just like when you have just had it done) and it bled and scabbed over in a lot of places. It still has not recovered and it is very uncomfortable.
I'm sure that this isn't common but just like you to be aware of all the risks, especially ones you don't usually come across before going for it.
    Good luck.

I take it you've been to the Dr about this?

You certainly shouldn't consider laser removal whilst the tattoo is misbehaving like this - but then any decent place doing laser removal would refuse whilst this is going on.

You really need to find out what is happening with it, and get it sorted out.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Only get a tattoo if you really want something that you want to stick with you forever, and no matter what they/it does, you will still love it. You must also want it for you and not for something to show. As so many people have them these days, they are pretty boring and unoriginal now.

I'd only ever get a tattoo if I thought it would add something to who I am, and to be honest, I like me the way I am.

I've wanted a tattoo for ages but (a) i'm a big wuss and think it'll hurt like hell, and (b) i had not decided what i wanted.
Now i know what i want, but i'm not going to get it until i graduate. When i graduate from my Maths degree i intend to get a pi tattooed somewhere, have not decided where.

How it's charged out can vary.

Some places do it by the sq cm, others by the session.

Some can be quite fussy about how big an area they'll do in one go, or how many tattoos per session.

I charge £80 per session and will do pretty much as much as I can in that 20-30 min.

Providing someone is fit and well, with a pretty good immune system there's not really a problem.

Laser setting is another thing that you need to be careful of. Tattoo parlours that operate lasers ( and always make sure the laser place is registered with the Care Quality Commission - what used to be the Healthcare Commission - as many places like tattoo parlours aren't) tend to be quite macho about it and whack the laser up too high. Little is gained by this, and it's easy to pemanently scar if it's done this way.

On average, depending on colour, age of tattoo and position, it can take about 10 session to get rid of a tattoo.

That picture is interesting, because someone a grade above me at work has several on his lower arm. Love the homophobia there too.

Heh, the location of most of my OH's tattoos doesn't feature in the diagram! (Calves). Wonder what that means?

Although I don't agree with a lot of the opinionated views on here, I would say that getting a tattoo should be free from any kind of pressure. Having it as your birthday present means that you're adding a time constraint, which could lead you to making an unwise decision.

I waited about 10 years before finally getting my first tattoo and still love it now. So that worked for me, but there's no magic formula that works for everyone.

That said, if you're looking for designs just type in tattoo designs into google and there's tons of sites out there.
