Sometimes I think I'd like a tattoo but I am in the camp whereby people should get one that's personal rather than pick a picture out of a book. I love Miami Ink because the clients on there go in with a personal story behind the design. I think on women less is definately more when it comes to tattoos. I do think say Amy Winehouse looks a bit skanky (I guess her ratty hair doesn't help LOL!) because I think she's got too many. Likewise Kat Von D from Miama/LA Ink although I do love her stars on the side of her face.
My H has a tattoo which is our wedding date in roman numerals. Its personal, not something everyone has and he does get looks from people trying to decipher what it is! He's saving our divorce date for the other arm ;)
I have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife :D Louise Brooks
All will be well in the end. If it's not well, it's not the end.

I think Kat Von D just about pulls it off because you can tell she really doesn't care if anyone thinks she looks skanky! :rotfl::)

Have a serious think about it is the only advice i can give. Make sure the design is one that will stand the test of time.

I have a small chinese symbol on my back, which could mean chicken chow mein for all i know, but they tell me it means love and peace :p

Have chosen my next one for inside of the thigh or calf muscle, not 100% sure yet.

I would think long and hard about it.

The only small and discreet tattoo I've seen and liked is on a friend, she has her newborn baby's handprint tattooed below her left breast over her heart, very sweet and personal.

Don't do it. What's wrong with a pair of earrings or some perfume?

There are lots of nicer things that someone can get you for your birthday.

I've got one and really regret having it. At the time I really wanted it, but 10 years later, I wish I'd not bothered.

Tattoos are cheap, tacky, chavvy and actually pretty boring these days. Everyone has them.

If you really fancy the idea of a tattoo (which you don't sound like you do), get a temporary one if you want it for a particular reason.

What's wrong with earrings or perfume? They're about as original as a very, very unoriginal thing.

And no, I'm not saying in this day and age that tattoos are original, because they're not. But I personally love them, so no, there's nothing I love more than when someone offers to get me a tattoo for my birthday. I have three tattoos that were bought for me, all designed for me by a tattoo artist, not flash designs.

My tattoos are neither chavvy or tacky and they are most definitely not cheap, please don't lump all people who have tattoos into the stereotypical 'tattooed' group of chavs with stars on their hips and their boyfriend/girlfriends name tattoed on. It's insulting. There are those of use who love, and put a great deal of time an effort into our tattoos. I got my first tattoo 12 years ago and I love it as much today as I did then, and no, I'm far from covered in them, you can't see any of mine.

If you a thinking of a tattoo, think LONG and hard about it, don't get flash, don't get one you've seen on the net, get one designed for you, if you can't think of an original idea, don't get a tattoo until you have.

When you do think of an idea, don't rush out and get it, if you love it, you'll still love it in six months. Because at the end of the day, if you decide after a few years that you don't like it, you'll still havr to look at it for the rest of your life.

I also can't stress the importance of finding a good artist, check portfolio's, make sure they're health registered, go in and talk any worries through with them. If you have any reservations whatsoever at all, go elsewhere. And don't go based on price, as far as tattoos go, good art isn't cheap and cheap art isn't good.

LOL, that's the exact reason I don't like Miami/LA ink, it's all so staged. I know obviously that's the way they make TV, but not a single person on those shows goes and gets a tattoo simply because they like it. It's all got some huge, life altering meaning behind it when in reality, the majority of tattoos people have are gotten simply because someone loves the design or the art work. So now people seem to think it's not okay to get a tattoo simply because you love a particular design.

Although personally I'd never get that many, I love Kat Von D's tattoos. I think they look amazing on her. But then she has the benefit of being tattooed by the worlds best lol.

I just went to the tattoo shop and had a look at the pictures on the wall. What might have been important or personal to me at 21 would not necessarily have meant the same to me at 42 anyway!

I ended up with a bird on my arm - not even sure what kind of bird it's supposed to be. It's blurred and faded now but I've never regretted it. The bloke who tattooed me died recently, he was from a well known family of tattooists.

You forgot to include the words "In my opinion......." ;)

You're hardly going to come on here and say that yes, you have made yourself look cheap and tacky are you? It's only others that are going to think that of you. You're obviously not going to think it of yourself.

Very true, my apologies, in my opinion I look neither cheap, chavvy or tacky lol. ;)

  • Just by the sound of your post I don't think you're there yet and I agree with others that it should have sentimental value that will last forever because you will regret it otherwise.

As for discreatness, I have 2. One is a small cluster of stars just below my right hip, which hardly anyone sees (i'm only 21 so not just cos I'm old or anything!) but I don't like it so much anymore as I got it on my 18th birthday and my ex was there stoned off his head and thats all I think about when I look at it. Its pretty though and small and its only me who knows that now!

Other is beautiful (if I say so myself) its a stretch of small stars across my right foot just above the toe line. It is easy to cover up but also easy to show, I don't think its chavvy because its black and small and isn't novelty. It means something too because it was a personal achievement to take myself to New Zealand on my own - thats where I got it and I have soooo many good memories that it reminds me of.

If anything don't rush and if you aren't sure, theres always another birthday - and some people on here are right - it can be more unique to be tattooless...

let us know when and if you make any decision :)
