  • at 6.15 tonight my wonderful beautiful Tommy-licious was helped to go to sleep forever.
her breathing problems were down to fluid filling her chest and abdomen.
the vet said he could give her tablets but my husband and i said no-we made the decision on her behalf that enough was enough.
she was purring up until the end and thankfully it was very quick.the vet was very sympathetic and let us stay as long as we liked.

she had 2 and a half wonderful years with us. she ate when she wanted.we had the door always open for her.the garden was her garden. she had the run of the house when she needed to choose where to sleep for the night.there was always a willing hand to stroke her and plenty of laps to chose from.

i KNOW we did the right thing but i am absolutely heartbroken. i will write again tomorrow but i needed to come on here and say thank you for all your replies.someone helped me make up my mind before i went to the vets-im not going to read the replies again now to thank who it was-ill do it tomorrow.

so to my beautiful girl. i love you and im already lost without you.i hope you forgive me.i know we did our best for you today and every other day you were with us.

    you really were fabulous

    you were my tommy-licious

Yes, most here expected this. 18 years old? How good is that? What a wonderful life Tom lived, 18 years and you were her Mum.

ah so sorry to hear that - but you did her a great kindness, hard as it is for you it was your last act of love for your little cat.

Grieve for her - it is bound to hurt - but feel glad that she had you and that you had her, she had a lovely, happy old age with you. Animals live in the moment, and it sounds like she had a great time with you, the best a cat could wish for - she lived a lifetime in her last two years.

I am so sorry for your dreadfully painful loss ... having lost my last cat due to mouth cancer I read the same signs with your little sweetheart that I saw with mine ... the signs that say, "I'm nearly ready to go .... "

It is a hard thing to do ... to decide "when" ... but I truly believe that you got the timing right ... you did everything you could for her ... to have given her more tablets would have only prolonged the inevitable. It might have worked for a short while till the fluid build up became worse then your little girl may have had much more distress and discomfort ...

You gave her every chance possible ... but when things were getting too much for her, you gave her her freedom ... freedom from pain and discomfort ... freedom from being scared and frightened because of how she was.

Your love protected her and made her feel secure in the time she was with you and today your love for her stood the true test ... only someone who loves an animal with all their heart with that special, selfless love can give their friend the help and support they need when they need it the most.

No matter how many times we go through this, it never gets easier ... I'm thinking of you both tonight ... and your little girl, safe on the lap of an angel ...

Our friends leave pawprints on our hearts and in time to come you will be able to look back on the precious time you shared with her and will remember only the good times ... until then, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to grieve for your very dear friend ... take time to come to terms with this terrible loss ... but remember that she will only ever be a thought away.

    Sending love and hugs xxx

I went through this a couple of months ago with my first cat, Spook. I still miss her, the funny, grumpy little thing. We had a mousemat made with her picture on, from the Purrs in our Hearts website, as she used to love lying across the keyboard when my OH was trying to type!

RIP Tom - and hope you feel better tomorrow.
  • I was so sorry to hear about your poor Tom. I went through the same thing with my very old cat at the beginning of the year. I was always scared to take him to the vet in case he said it was his time. In the end I knew it was his time as I could see it in his eyes.

Like many people have said it's the last act of kindness you can give your much loved pet- I sure he passed knowing how much you loved him.
