    Fifth Anniversary Combo Breaker
I feel you pain and I felt that I had to reply. I have a Volvo XC90 and we were going on holiday To Ukraine when in Germany my car went into limp mode and suit filter message came on. We didn't bother with calling out a breakdown cover and somehow we 'limped' to Ukraine to my family where we took the car to Volvo specialists. They told me that it was failed turbo and it would be very costly to replace it, even with a reconditioned one. They have then proceeded to check everything electronically and to flush the suit filter out via the computer, they had to do it 3 times as the car kept going into limp mode. Eventually, another mechanic who specialised in electronics, cleaned up all the contacts and that seem to have solved the problem. They told me that every time contacts either sparked or something and sent a signal to ECU, which then sent a signal to suit filter in order to put the car into limp mode. All of this was resolved over 3 days. Guys concentrated on getting the car back on the road and couldn't be more helpful.
I didn't even bother getting in touch with Auto Protect but Had this happened in UK, the job would've cost me hundreds if not thousands of pounds and I doubt Autoprotect would cover it.

Last year two of my rear bearings failed and they would only pay for one of them at half of the price (not genuine part of course) and a silly hourly rate. So it was cheaper for me to source parts myself and get a friend mechanic to fit them, it still cost me less that if I went through them.

But then I recently had to make a claim for the stearing wheel barrel (3-4posts before yours) and they have eventually paid out but it took them nearly 5 weeks and a few phone calls to do that!

Regarding the service, I think you need to service the car every 6 months if you don't know when the last service was when the car was purchased, but I serviced it yearly and they were ok with that.

I really hope that you will get this resolved and get your money back from them, keep us posted on how you getting on with the case and Good Luck!

I bought a little pug 107 which came with the warranty for 3 months. Autoprotect sent a text to me to say the warranty was due to expire, so I called them and said that the hazard lights were not working, (switch) the ignition was sticky (barrel) and the suspension was making a banging sound. They use Halfords to do all the repairs, so I went there. They were great :), but unfortunately NONE of these FAILED parts were covered.

So why were they great I hear you ask. Autoprotect will get out of anything if you ask my opinion. I was referring to the chaps at Halfords in Dunstable being great, just a shame they partnered up with Autoprotect who, again in my opinion, were clearly not going to pay out on the claim. Apparently these items are listed as "excluded" on the paperwork. Am I livid? not really as I expected this would be the out come, just glad I didn't pay for it. Its a "piece of mind" add on when traders sell cars and worth the square root of FA to us the customer.
  • AVOID AVOID AVOID!! They are like worms & snakes that wriggle out of everything put before them & will argue with you until you are blue in the face! AUTOPROTECT ARE SCAM ARTIST. I cannot believe they are allowed to do business in this country in the year 2015?
  • I'm surprised to read such horror stories on here, and I certainly won't be taking out another Autoprotect policy! I got a year's SIlver Plus warranty with my car back in June, for £300. I figured that was pretty good considering it was a 10yr old car and anything could happen.

In Oct the two wheel bearings on the o/s went, doing the characteristic rumble. Phoned autoprotect, and the woman on the phone sounded pretty hostile, as if she was annoyed that I had taken it to a garage for inspection. She said that one of their "engineers" would need to speak to the garage. Fine, no problem, the garage phoned and after being on hold for about 10mins they finally spoke to an "engineer" and the job was approved. Had to pay for the bearings, email Autoprotect a copy of the invoice and they paid out after a few days. Only for the parts though, not for the associated wheel alignment. But whatever, fair enough.

I am now concerned though, crossing my fingers that nothing big does go wrong (like the clutch or the flywheel or the turbo). Just had a drop link and abs sensor replaced - both covered under warranty but I forgot to check with Autoprotect before getting it done. Have emailed them but not hopeful about the response, especially after reading this thread!
  • I purchased a car in April last year, it was a BMW 116i, 59 plate. I was sold a warranty by the garage and told of the parts that would and would not be covered, it seemed to be suitable and I felt that in purchasing this 'extra' I was being responsible and planning ahead in case anything went wrong with the car.
Around 1 month ago I was arriving at work when my car broke down, luckily I was near a garage that just so happened to be a BMW specialist and managed to get the car to them. I rang AP and they advised me to give their contact details and my policy details to the garage for them to contact AP. They did as I advised and were instructed to undertake the job of finding out what was wrong with the car, unfortunately the Crank shaft had eroded and there were traces found in the oil sump. The garage had confirmed with AP that the oil level, filter etc were in suitable condition and that there was no obvious reason why this had happened. Because of the problem the engine needed to be replaced to the tune of about £3,600. AP sent out an engineer and they came out to check the car over, AP rang the garage the following day and asked to send a second engineer (I'm assuming this was because the first engineer had said he couldn't find any reason why it had happened and they couldn't decline the claim) and they came out yesterday. They have looked over the car and today AP contacted the garage to say they were not authorising a claim for a replacement engine because the engineer has claimed that the problem is due to gradual mechanical failure (a deteriorating component) as opposed to sudden mechanical failure!
I could understand it being gradual if we had any sign or prior warning of the issues and ignored them but we were completely unaware of the issues until the car SUDDENLY died on me!
If AP only cover issues that have SUDDENLY occurred then why on earth don't they send an engineer to complete a FULL inspection of each car before they CON people into buying a warranty? I have had the car less than 1 year and having purchased it on finance I now have another 3 years worth of payments to make for a car that is now useless to me because I was duped into believing that I had covered myself in case of something very costly SUDDENLY happening to the car.

Anyone made a complaint and had their decision reviewed or is it pointless wasting my time with them?
  • Will never use this company again. I brought my limited edition Astra 3 months ago from a Vauxhall dealership. Common Astra H fault is the gear box. We were reassured by the garage this would be covered by warranty. What we were not told is one I'd have to pay the labour to have my gear box taken apart and this would not be refunded either way and two they don't cover bearings on GOLD cover! Auto protect are awful!!
  • I am a consultant to the general public. They have tried this nonsense with one of my customers. They are clearly in breach of contract as far as the PRECISE wording of their own scgedule is concerned. Check your wording VERY CAREFULLY, they may also be in breach. If so, sue them, small claims is EASY!!!

Hi -currently in for repair under warranty (they actually said yes!0 but they are using reconditioned non manufacturers part. first one fitted - not fit for purpose, not powerful enough to operate, now sending out another reconditioned part just in case last one was faulty. Can they do this? I have a high claim work value (paid for the best policy going ) and even if manufacturers part was fitted still would not meet the claim level....can anyone advise...even dealership have said not fit for purpose too. Auto protect not listening!
    HELP :(

This is my first post on forum
  • I could be in same boat....they sent their own part as over £500 cheaper, did fit but did not work as not powerful enough for the roof operation...now sending another 'reconditioned' part garage to fit but we still believe will not be fit for purpose. I already paid for labour first time round so refused to foot the cost a second time round - they agreed (however - I still have to pay up front to the garage and then claim back). Currently awaiting to see if new part works - if not I insist on manufacturers part being used at no cost to me....if not FOS here we come. I have played there game and helped them keep their costs down but now they need to play mine under TCF - treating customers fairly!! will keep you informed:p
  • if still under warranty don't give up - keep going back to AP - then FOS - you need to ask them under what proof are they making their opinion on and why 2 engineers. also get your finance company involved - they should/will be able to assist.
