  • This may be true of some people but I do not expect anything other than good service and respect for the paying customer. I expected Autoprotect to pay out for a repair to my motorcaravan but because the engineer fixed the fault while diagnosing (it was a small fault that was simple to fix) instead of dismantling, leaving it in bits till he was authorized to start and then fixing it, they tried to get out of paying. I had to threaten them with the financial Ombudsman before they finally paid up. A telephone call to Autoprotect takes anything up to 20 minutes in a queue to get connected to a customer 'service' advisor. Why should I pay a mechanic to wait on the phone just to be told that because he used his common sense they will not pay up? The staff at Autoprotect claim that they cannot make outgoing calls, so the customer has to phone again and again, just to wait and eventually be told that they will not pay out for one reason or another! Another claim was refused because they claimed that it related to 'friction materials'. Maybe it did but it was not wear of friction materials that caused the problem. It was mechanical breakdown which caused damage inside a brake drum which then bent a brake shoe which broke the wheel cylinder. Not a friction material wear issue!
    Avoid Autoprotect if you want a stress free life.

    I have a 2006 Jaguar S type 2.7D bought on 18 Feb14 with 59,000 miles on the clock. I took a 6 month gold warranty with auto protect.
    On 2nd May it failed to proceed near my home and the car was recovered and delivered to my normal non main dealer service people. They diagnosed a burnt out ECU and stated that I would need to contact a Jaguar main dealer as only they could reprogramme a new ECU into the car. The car was recovered to the nearest Jaguar main dealer. I asked that they carry out a diagnostic check and the call Auto protect as required under the terms of the policy. The diagnostic check, down to me to pay for, revealed that the ECU needed replacement, £740, plus one of the turbos had seized and needed replacing, £1,240 plus an EGR valve, £175. Total estimated cost including labour, £3800. Auto protect said the offending parts would need to be removed and their engineers would call to examine them. They took 4 days to arrive and several phone calls at premium rates each call taking a minimum of 10 minutes before being put through. Auto protect's engineers were dictatorial and forthright to the point of being rude with the trained Jaguar mechanic

    Guess what, all down to wear and tear and not covered even though there had been a sudden mechanical and electrical breakdown.

    The Jaguar people were as helpful as possible and have now agreed to fit warranted after market parts, saving me approx £1000. I expect to collect the car in a couple of days. Next time I buy a used car I won't be in so much of a hurry and will read the small print of any offered warranty beforehand. Auto protect's warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on.

    I have only once bought a car with a third-party warranty. I don't know who it was with (probably not Autoprotect), but the lesson was a valuable one.


    I bought a 1985 Capri 2.8i in about 1992 from a small local car dealer. He made great play of the car having a 3-month 'gold' warranty included in the sale. I bought the car and only read the warranty a few days later, a big mistake. In the small print was the requirement that for the warranty to be valid, I had to have the car regularly serviced at a garage authorised by the warranty company. And the frequency of service - every 4000 miles, and an oil change every 1000 miles!


    I went back to the dealer and asked if he was serious. He was. I asked if I could have the cost of the warranty refunded, as it had clearly unreasonable conditions. He would not. I left it at that. Of course, I didn't avail myself of the servicing, and so the warranty lapsed within a couple of weeks.


    Luckily, the car was a gem and gave me a couple of years of faultless service. But since then I have always refused any kind of third-party warranty on the basis that they are going to be a rip-off by their very nature. Reading this thread, I wasn't wrong. It has probably saved me thousands over the years. My sympathies to all who have been conned in this way.
    If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.

    What's the point of a three or six month warranty anyway? The only person it protects is the stealer who would be liable for any faults in that time. And the robbing barstewards expect the customer to pay extra for this?

    Time and time again you hear of people having a warranty claim refused in the first couple of months of owning a car but they are chasing the wrong person. If their is a fault they should be chasing the person responsible, the stealer, not some mickey mouse warranty company.

    Managers never 'able to come to the phone' to sort a problem

    Unwilling to authorise Air Con diagnostics despite being fully covered in the policy

    Every excuse in the book to avoid authorising

    We purchased a warranty from AutoProtect via Imperial Car Supermarket and have had our policy voided just over 1 year into the 3 year term as the car was serviced 'outside of the manufacturers recommendations' but on the schedule advised by Imperial Car Supermarket. Imperial advised every 10K verbally at time of purchase.


    The service logbook that they stamped prior to purchase had no information about when the next service was due mileage wise or a due date. Prior entries in the service book did have so at least you would know!


    Anyway, it was serviced at the correct mileage but went past the 1 year since last service by a just few weeks. Therefore we had breached the 1 year part of the guide so they made our policy void with no refunds available!


    We also had major trouble getting repairs done before this and they were rude to us and even stopped a repair in progress at the Halfords garage that they had authorised!


    Imperial Car do not want to know - has anyone else had any joy on this type of issue and challenged the 1 year time rule when the service mileage is OK? AP are saying that the car will breakdown as it was serviced at the right mileage but the late in terms of time. Halfords said to us that is nuts? Do we now have a car that is ruined?


    I suspect we have wasted 1750 quid as we took the word of Imperial Car Sales people on the service interval as being 10k when it should be 10k or 1 year. Can anyone advise if there is anything we might do?

    I have just returned from holiday in Scotland 230 miles from home , my Jeep Grand Cherokee 07 broke down , I had it recovered to the dealers 50 miles from were I was staying, contacted the dealer the problem was a injector asked the dealer Arnold Clark ARY to contact Autoprotect before starting any repair, Autoprotect told the dealer they would provide the parts 3-4 days after my holiday ended or they would pay £369.00 of the £1016.23 bill, Autoprotect knew the position I was in, and stalled , I had to pay the bill to get my car back to come home and I still can not get the payment they said they would pay they keep stalling now they want the invoice made out to the dealer I bought the car from 6 months ago when, I paid the bill I purchase the warranty and I own the car, and on top of that the Jeep dealer is not interested in helping me too. Autoprotect Gold warranty, Autoprotect Warranty don't touch them waste of money.
  • i got sold a policy 300 pounds and guess what they barely cover anything. they have a clause for everything. dont go to autoprotect go to aa breakdown repair. i reported autoprotect to ombudsman after bad experience.
  • Auto Protect warranties are NOT worth the paper they are written on. My vehicle ground to a halt and was taken to my local garage for repairs. I have full comprehensive Gold Warranty and the vehicle has been dealer serviced as it should be.

    The vehicle was found to have a seized alternator. This caused the alternator belt to snap, fouling the timing belt which in turn resulted in a damaged cylinder head.

    Repairs are totalling approx £2,500

    Auto Protect will not pay out on the warranty as they say failing drive belts are not covered - even the independent engineer agrees the damage was caused by the sudden seizure of the alternator.

    Auto Protect tell me I can pay for another independent engineer to produce a report. Their report and my report can they be submitted to the FSA for adjudication.....the process can take between three to six months.

    In the meantime I have no vehicle and the garage has my vehicle taking up space on a ramp which they need.

    Bottom line - Auto Protect warranties are absolutely useless and they are basically running a scam.

    Most aftermarket warranties specifically exclude damage caused as a result of a component failure, so in this case they may cover the replacement of the alternator, but not the damage caused by its failure.


    I know that's no help in getting your car fixed and I'm sorry to hear of your problem, but ultimately the only warranty worth having is a manufacturer's own.
