I put mine straight into bags without washing as well - get about half a pound in a standard small resealable bag. Sometimes get a load of windfall apples or plums - just peel/stone whatever, cook brielfy with a bit of sugar & freeze in crumble/pie sized amounts in plastic tubs or the sort of heavy-duty freezer bags designed for soup/stew.July 2024 GC £0.00/£400

Thanks both of you. I thought I would wash them first to get rid of any bugs. When I put them into a bowl I sometimes see an ant or 2.
I also do well with cooking apples from the garden at work. I can be bothered to go and get a carrier bag full to take home, peal chop, cook and freeze. We have eaten sooo many apple cakes, apple with roast pork and apple crumbles. We eat the apples all year around as I picked up a lot when in season.If winter comes, can spring be far behind?

Soak them overnight in salty water to get rid of the maggots (unless you prefer the extra protein
) a quick rinse off and straight in the freezer.
We picked some of the large edible rosehips yesterday - checked them all over but thought we'd best salt water them just in case - picked 5 dead earwigs out this morning - blugh!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
I freeze mine in margerine tubs or the rectangular lidded one from the takeaways (stack better). Then mark with contents and year. They never stick together.Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

I have some blackberries in the freezer that have been there for 3 years. They were wild out of my grandma's garden and are the best tasting blackberries ever. Im actually sentimental about them as she died two years ago. Anyway what shall i do with them? Do you think they still ok to ues? I could get some jam made...Im not up to much at the moment!!I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.0 -
I'd make jam or jelly. The flavour might not be at its best by now but they'll taste of something. Perhaps the best thing to do is to make blackberry whisky. There's a recipe somewhere on here (failing that google). Basically it is just blackberries, sugar and whisky left in a large jar until Christmas.0

Don't make the whisky... it's grim :eek:... I've got a bottle you can have if you want to try it. Don't waste decent blackberries on it
(or decent whisky
)

I made a blackberry and apple crumble on saturday with blackberries that have been in the freezer for a couple of years and it tasted lovely. I think they'll be fine if your cooking then 'in something' rather than using them as fresh blackberries.March 2014 Grocery challenge £250.000

I made blackberry syrup out of 2 yr old frozen blackberries, meant to be blackberry jelly but didn't set!:rotfl:It's lovely with lemonade or poured over ice cream.Our days are happier when we give people a bit of our heart rather than a piece of our mind.
